      These dont have problem with head gaskets but due have many issues with the heads cracking at between valves. I think it was fixed in the series 3 engines.

          These actuator failures are very common here is a video for a similar code but the diagnostics/system verification are the same. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B7HrBN2tvY. It should be noted that one of the first things your should check is oil viscosity and level. Also Measure the resistance of each CMP actuator solenoid valve assembly. Resistance should be between 8–12 ohms.

              Sorry should have noted i already checked for that. Checked it at idle and while revving using a back pressure gauge at the pre cat o2 sensor.

                      I would definitely look into the head gasket being blown. You can buy and or sometimes rent a block tester at a parts store to test for combustion gases in the cooling system. They are easy to use and usually contain a blue liquid and if it turns yellow it means a combustion/exhaust gas is getting into the cooling system. There are videos on youtube on how to use them.
