Video of the issue, car starts will shut off immediately. If I hold the accelerator down after the start she will stay on but sputters a bit and will shut off when I let off.
Update on my progress, I hooked the battery to a charger overnight and the battery works. The car now turns over starts and immediately shuts off.
I will try that, its a shame because the battery is only a year old. But I left it sitting so long it may just be done for.
I cleaned the terminals really well and tightened them up. Same result from attempting to jump start the car, slow crank that then builds up speed and keeps trying to start but never does. I do not get any clicking or any strange sounds, I just turn the key and it keeps cranking and not starting. But only if I have the jumpers connected. Without them the battery is dead even after a night on a trickel charger.
So this may be a stupid question, but I am an amature mechanic. If I had the car hooked to another car for a jump start, would that still not provide enough power to get the car started if my vehicle had a dead battery in it?
I will try giving it a cleaning tonight, thank you. It has been quite frustrating because it seems like it wants to start but when it cranks, it cranks slowly and the lights will dim in the process.
Yes it is a 1987, when I try and jump the car it does not start. What happened was after I replaced the old battery the car started up perfectly. I drove it home, parked and for the next few days I would start it up before I left for work just to make sure. On friday I started the car, moved the shifter from park, through each gear R, N, D.. When I placed the car back in park. I turned it off, then tried to start it up again and it did exactly what happened before I replaced the battery. I turn the key nothing happens no sound, no click, just all the lights come on.

Having a new no start issue 🙁 , this time I went out to start the car, I had taken it out of park and when I put it back. The vehicle will not start up again, headlights all power works fine now that the battery has been replaced. So I am down to neutral safety switch or the starter. If it is the NSS, I am going to have to do a bypass, but cannot find which wires need to be spliced.

It ended up being the battery, after work I went and had the old one checked at the auto store. It was dead beyond dead. The battery itself was about 6 years old so it was time to let it go anyways. The previous owner did not drive it much so it seems like a lot of things were not checked very often. After I installed the new battery she started right up, I also noticed where the drain was coming from. The amazing 1987 tape deck had a cassette stuck in it, and I heard a clicking sound after the car was off. Turns out the stereo was trying to eject the tape over and over and over even when the car was turned off. So I pulled the fuse to the stereo and the battery has not lost any more charge.
You might be able to get an inspection light down into the cylinder through the spark plug hole where you can inspect for impact damage. If you find any, the engine is done and needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
So far… I think we are gonna be ok. I placed a magnet into the spark plug holes and fished around for any metal bits. It seems to be clean. Just need to install the crankshaft sprocket which my puller only does just that… pulls. So I am not sure how to install it because I don’t wish to drop $40 on a kit just to install this thing but I also know its ill advised to bang it back on with a hammer.
I think the pic of the spark plug is most telling. Looks like something got down into that cylinder. If that’s the case, you’re in for a rebuild or replacement of the engine.
Keep us posted.
Two out of the 4 were smashed, one was just bent and the 4th was just fine. I read somewhere that on some cars you can over torque the plug and it will sit too low? Resulting in contact. But I have a feeling that would be too good to be true in this case.. Looks as if I will be taking more off this weekend.
