I will look into grabbing one. The car is almost 100% stock so a lot of parts have never been replaced or serviced. With 80k miles the car still had the factory rotors and pads on it so removing the rotor from the hub was an adventure.
What I’m seeing is the fuel pump is only powering on if the VAF door is all the way open. The car use to stay on so long as the VAF was open and would idle now it will only stay on if the throttle is being pushed as well. I have no way to read the voltage though.
Also it seems like there are very few sources for parts on this car.
I have, what I noticed today is the arm that pulls on the throttle will slide under the mechanism that connects to the accelerator pedal. I’ll be honest I am use to the throttle cable going directly to the throttle or a drive by wire. This is my first time messing with something that seems to operate more like an antique clock more than a car lol. But the arm is connected to a peg that pulls on the throttle itself when the pedal is pushed down there seems to be a stop that is not working anymore and allows the arm to slide over it and locks it into place. It seems like its become very loose and may need to be replaced. The issue I am having now is that I have no clue what the actual name for these parts are. Because throttle cable doesn’t aid in my search for these parts.
So turned out to be the vane airflow meter. Because its a mechanical type AFM I tried holding the flap open and the car started right up. So… now onto the next problem with the throttle that sticks wide open only if you press the pedal down.
I would start with some new gas. Gas goes bad after it sits for a while. No sense attempting a bunch of other fixes until you’re sure you have good fuel in the tank. If it were me, I’d hook up my fuel injector cleaner to see if it ran fine without the fuel in the tank. If it did, I would confirm that the issue is the gas. Similar to what I did here.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Over the weekend I took off the intake and cleaned the MAF and put everything back and made sure there were no leaks. I was able to get the car to start and stay on after a few tries, but the idle is still very rough. Here is a youtube video of the car running.
Update:
So after replacing the plugs and charging the battery all the way back up. I am still un able to start, what happens is the same cranks no start up, could it be a bad fuel pump? I thought to rule this out because when I hold the throttle down the car will stay on and at high RPM I get no sputter. My personal thoughts is this is a fuel related issue, either a bad pump or the gas has gone bad. The question is would a bad pump work at all to give me the result I am getting also, if the fuel is bad what is the best next step for resolving this?
I will look into removing the gas, the car was pretty much empty when it sat. I put 2 gal of fresh gas in along with some gumout I did take a moment to switch out the plugs. The battery is on a charger now and I will try and see if she will start up tonight. Below is a pic of what my plugs looked like. So after cleaning the IAC I can get the vehicle to stay on, but I noticed that the engine is misfiring quite loud while idling very rough.
Update:
I used some TB cleaner and cleaned the TB and the IAC (the best I could without taking it off) the car now starts and will stay on without me holding the throttle down but the idle is still very low and rough when at low rpm.
I will check the vacuum lines because I did remove the throttlebody to clean it, maybe I missed a hose or maybe something broke.
Progress update:
When the car is started if I press down lightly on the accelerator the car will stay on, at low RPM there is a lot of shaking and sputtering. At high RPM the engine sounds normal and runs smooth. Since the car can start in any gear I took her around the block once, so long as I did not let up on the throttle the car drove smooth but would cut out if I let off.
I will try that, because it sputters and nasty smoke comes from the exhaust which leads me to believe you’re right. I had a friend who was convinced it was a vacuum leak but I’m not sure if I agree.
It was out of gas for a while I added 2 gallons fresh the other day.
I replaced the video had it set to private. If you refresh you should be able to see it now
