^ If that’s so you could try rolling your engine over without spark plugs, if it just stalled something like gas or oil could have caused something like a hydro lock situation… Since you do have an oil burning problem there is the change that high RPMs caused high oil pressure pushing more into the cylinders than normal.
Huh. I hadn’t even considered that. That would be amazing if that’s all it is– assuming lo lasting damage of course. Unfortunately since I’m at the mercy of friends to drive me places I can’t actually get back to the shop to try it out. But thanks for giving me some hope banana:
Those 8th Gen Corollas may be dull and boring, but as long as you don’t have an oil burning problem the 1zz-fe engines are pretty awesome.
I have an oil burning problem. In fact I added about 1.5 quarts about a week ago because there was just a drip on the end of the dip stick. Like I said, that car has been abused to hell….
Since yours is a non-vvt engine (Prior to 2000), you can find a replacement scrapyard engine for around $400-$500.
I figured, but then there’s the labor costs since I don’t think I could take on such a large job myself.
P.S. Yes, I think you may have screwed up your engine….
Annoyingly, I was just reading a couple threads on people who did the same thing… and were fine. No lasting damage. One kept hitting a “wall” of about 5k rpm, but after restarting the car it was fine. Seems I’m the only one who managed to do some real damage 🙁
well you can get a brand new Chevy Aveo (Daewoo Kalos) for like 10k 😀 more dependable than toyota anyday :D
My Corolla has been through a lot of abuse, both at my hands and at the hands of the previous owner (my father), so frankly it dying now after a single mistake is pretty impressive. I wouldn’t trust a Chevy to do that (though I do love their trucks). Plus the Chevy is about 10x more than my budget.
Frankly if I were to replace the car, I would just get a mid-90s Camry or somesuch. I really hated the corolla because it’s so lifeless and dull, but at this point I just need a car for the summer to get to work. After the summer I’ll have money to get something I really want. I know I can unload a Camry easily enough, so it might just be my best option :S

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ll wait for the real technician to check it out Monday (I’m hardly a technician, the most I’ve done is replace my starter motor and rear strut assemblies), but assuming I did kill it, the question then becomes do I replace the engine or the car. The rest of the car is actually in very good condition for its age, though the front strut assemblies will need replaced soon, but I can replace the whole car for $1000. Will see what the estimate is come Monday….
Does it pull to one side or pulsate when your braking?
Not at all. Seems perfectly normal, only symptom is there is no brakes for the first half of pedal travel.
Hmmm maybe trace the brake lines too, I know a guy that had a similar problem and one of the brake lines just flat out broke. But it should be pretty obvious if one did. Now watch your fluid if it get low it’s getting out somewhere. Also, is the abs light on? And it sounds kind of like the master cylinder let us know what you find out
Good luck
Thanks for the advice. Like I said the master seemed full, and she said it’s been this way for 6 months so I don’t think there’s a leak. I looked for traces of brake fluid around the wheels (hard to see the lines with the truck still on the ground) and didn’t see anything suspicious. No lights on or anything, and ABS seemed to do its job when I tried slamming the brakes earlier.
If the pads are on there way out. The piston will not
get the correct fluid pressure due to the over extension
of the piston.
Today I was able to do a quick visual inspection, but I have yet to jack it up and start popping wheels off.
-4 wheel disks
-pad wear does not seem excessive… at least on the side I could see
-brake fluid is topped off to the max
-fluid type is DOT 4+, because Mercedes has to be different (and I think the only place I can get some locally is the stealership for $15/liter or so)
-color is sort of dark brown, but not too dark… definitely still translucent
-she says it’s been this way for about 6 months, no work done to it
-braking full force had no effect (ABS seemed to kick in)Once I get my tools back from my friend (hopefully this week) we’ll bled the brakes. Hope that’ll solve it….
Thanks for your help.
Has there been any brake work done recently? how much pad
life is left? brake fluid full? condition of the fluid?
drum rear brakes or 4 wheel disc?
I don’t know… and somehow I doubt she does either. Would normal pad wear actually cause a spongy brake pedal though? Logically I would think the only effect would be for the brake pedal to get closer to the floor; I don’t understand how this could allow air to enter the system, but then again I’m a noob
I’ll ask her about it when she gets home later today and hopefully I’ll get a better look at the car sometime this week.
