try to keep busy, don’t let the older guys keep you down. Theres gonna be days you wish you hadn’t taken the job, just keep your head up, and never stop learning. Welcome to the world of auto mechanics!

I’m in school to be a diesel tech, the best advise I can give you is if you have a Mercedes dealer near you see if they have a sprinter program. I have some Volvo/Mack training through school as well, it wasn’t hard to come by so that is an option as well.

That was my first dealership job, i learned a lot and Mercedes training is extremely good. The work just wasn’t there as my dealership had lost a big contract and it was about an hour and a half away so the trip didn’t justify the pay I was making. If they hadn’t lost it I would still be a Mercedes tech, it was a great small team.

So far at Toyota I’ve worked one some Hino’s and some Brazilian diesel models but nothing real heavy. I’ve wanted to leave and go work for ford but I have heard horror stories of the dealerships around here from diesel techs. I’m hoping to get a job with the county when I finish seeing as how my dad worked for them 40+ years and he’s doing great, retired and traveling in Europe etc..

Best shot is to try one of the big 3 or Mercedes.

Is it a team pay system? If so its not as good. Flat rate could be fun but when it’s dead, it’s dead. i worked in a little shop before Toyota as well, from what I’ve experienced it’s much more demanding, they expect more out of you. As for the brand certification it’s worth it, at Toyota at least. Toyota pays more for the tests you have done, and send you to a sort of school to be properly trained as well. Doesn’t hurt I get $10 for every test I pass also! Lucky for you your old boss seems like a nice guy and said you can fall back if it’s not your thing.

Any little thing I do I wear gloves for 2 reasons.

                1. Oil and harmful chemicals that can seep in through the skin, I’d rather not have that.

                2. Interior work, I like being able to take off dirty gloves and have my hands clean to work with interiors, although some customers are pigs and the inside is as dirty as the outside.

I usually will wear 1 pair per day after every job flip them inside out to air dry the insides, that’s the only con as far as I’m concerned having sweaty hands isn’t fun 🙁

I buy the Diamond grip gloves same as Eric and they are awesome!

My father had a 1959 Austin Healey 3000, sadly he lost it to the communist government in Cuba in 1975. I guess some political figure wanted a sports car.

Funny story he went to the car lot and almost bought an Aston Martin DB5 but it had a Chevy engine in it, so he went with this, that was in about ’69.

I recently had the pleasure of driving one and it was awesome! The exhaust sounds amazing coming from the straight 6!

His was identical to the one in the photograph I posted.

I’d take a Camaro with the proven LS3 over any turbo car, I have an LS powered vehicle now and it’s never failed me (knocks on wood).

Toyota really dropped the ball on the FRS it could have been so good. It’s made for the market of kids in high school or weekend track warriors , yet is underpowered and over priced just like the joke of a civic si that Honda keeps pumping out. The kids want turbos and power hence how many genesis, focus st and Mazdaspeed 3’s are on the road today. Toyota needs to up the quality and get back in to the performance game, it’s been more than a decade since the last celica and supra. but I’m just a tech what do they care for what I say?

The ridiculous part is it has a Subaru boxer engine WITHOUT A turbo. I mean come on! Make a red edition or something at least. It’s absurd, I would pick a genesis 2.0t over that car that’s how bad it is.

It has really changed my view of them, on top of all that the FR-S is under selling we have about 80 on the lot that just sit.

I agree with toyotas going down the crapper my parents have owned plenty toyotas, I came home from the hospital in a 93 Camry V6 (that car was a champ) they bought a 4-runner which has given stupid little problems (dashboard cracks and wiper problems) but since working at the dealer I don’t know if it’s owners or the cars themselves but it’s gone downhill the Lexus techs are CONSTANTLY pulling engines on the is250-350 for the carbon build up recall, valve covers leak like it’s going out of business and water pumps are practically guaranteed every day I come to work. The FR-S has some sort of problem with fuel pumps as well..Toyota needs to get it together!

That stress story really freaked me out. how did you deal with stress after? Picked up a hobby or what I think that would be some pretty helpful info, most mechanics I know just drink the day away which leads to pretty bad health problems, got any pointers on dealing with it?

Update: my friend came in to work on his day off and handed me his broken mg725 to warranty for him (snap on comes Monday’s) he’s had it for about a year he says. I was going to tear it down and see what failed but thought maybe the tool guy won’t like that, warranty issues etc.. I guess it’s hit and miss but I’ve seen 3 fail in the 7 months I’ve worked for Toyota, everyone ended up getting an IR off the truck.
Snap on mg725 is $600 here which is why i will never buy it.

                                IR 2235 is $400

My gun is a snap on but it’s from a retired mechanic seen plenty of use from both me and him Was having a play with it today and i think i’m going to retire it to a home use gun and get the 2235 for the garage.
I got my 2135timax from Sears for $236 the 2235 does look like an animal though, but the 2135 is a proven impact, I personally wouldn’t buy another snap on impact.

Funny thing is I’ve seen 2 snap on impact give up the ghost but my IR is still going. The snap on gun gun is powerful but just falls apart, the selector switch is constantly getting warranty claims on my tool guys truck, I sold my snap on and bought an IR.
