Powertrain Control Module, or “engine computer.” I had an occasional rough idle on my 02 neon, seemed worse under electrical load (using the rear window defroster while the headlights were on). I never took the car to the dealer for an update but I had to replace my PCM for an unrelated issue and it never did that again and idled much smoother. There is a TSB about updating the software to cure idle issues. But turning the wheel while idling causes the computer to tell the idle air control valve to move to compensate for the power steering load. If that makes your car smooth out I’ll bet that’s it. Otherwise I’d say it’s motor mounts/mount alignment
turning the wheel did not smoothit out , thanks ,it was shaking before this ,i checked for air leak ,found a cap that was cracked that fitted on the throttle body ,re placed it and wait to see if the computer would adjust now that the leak was caped and sealed ,and it did ,it was running great ,like it should ,smooth,i had order a fuel filter before this andthought i should change it ,because i did not know when it had been change ,any how put the new fuel filter on and it started running rough again ,i am going to listen to the injector to see if i can here any problems and am thing of taking out the fuel filter and putting it back in ,i still have the old one ,i could try putting it back in and see what happens ,so thanks for now
Neons are also very particular about the alignment/preload on the torque strut mounts. If they were replaced previously they may not have had the proper alignment procedure done. Also there was a PCM update that addressed rough idle. Does it smooth out if you turn the steering wheel while it’s shaking?
what’s PCM , will have to try turning the wheel thing
