Though I agree with Jotmon1, I think changing 02 sensor is what *most* people do when they get a P0420 code.. Then see if P0420 or other codes reappear. (If it does, then, most likely the cat has used up its efficiency, which trips up/throws the code to the computer.) My GMC does that, and it runs better than it ever has…
What did the CA people say? It’s only smog? How did your print-out look?
Here in NJ, I got a car to pass – after it failed – with super, super, mega thorough cleanings. Test was so clean the guy did it twice, as he was in disbelief (“Is this the same truck I tested two weeks ago?” kind of thing.)
In NJ, it’s 1997, so it’s OBD2, so all they do is plug in the computer and tell you if it passed or failed. 1995 and older? The tailpipe test.
Well, it runs now… Fuel Pump appears not priming and it sounds like a motorcycle, though.
My Girlfriend has this GMC Envoy has a 4.2 in it. Im getting a P0300 random miss, P0340 Camshaft sensor, P1481 Cooling fan? From info i gather it was bought running ruff for cheap and it was parked and never touched again. I havent went in and did any real daig to it yet. but ive never messed with this motor before i dont know where to even start. Any idea as to what this might be?
Hello ram_man! Please tell BITOG that GHT says a friendly Hello.. and looks forward to partaking on there soon (that’s not up for debate, lol, I’m on there.)
As to the vehicle. Have a 2003 Envoy. XL, but the 4.2.. Same exact thing, especially 2002-2003 range (first and second year,) and I had P0300.
As you know, P0300 is “Random multiple misfire.” Happens usually after you crack a coil Seafoaming it, as I have done at least twice, possibly three times. Where to start: Get a coil. Best one is the Delphi unit, let me get that link for you: http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-12568062-Original-Equipment-Ignition/dp/B0013G03I4/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1448875041&sr=1-1&keywords=ACDelco+12568062+GM+Original+Equipment+Ignition+Control+Module ACDelco 12568062 GM Original Equipment Ignition Control Module – That is the one.
When you get either just one (as I did.. I actually needed two one time, the P0300 time) Or all six.. You need to “move” the coils, to see if you can isolate the misfire to a particular cylinder. It will change from P0301-P0306. The REAL bootleg way: Pull a wire while it’s running, listen for a change. If the engine idles down, it is working as it is supposed to, and only running on technically 4 cylinders for the briefest of moments the plug is pulled, since there is still likely a dead coil – the prime cause of a P0300 – and the one you pulled for about 5 seconds, to listen.) If you pull it and there is NO change: That’s your coil.
Once you find that coil. REMEMBER WHICH ONE IT IS.. They really ARE identical, and can get confused in about 2 seconds, despite your best efforts, so mark it clearly.. and Put it on ANOTHER cylinder, and create the P0303, P0305.. Literally pick one. The three in the middle are the easiest to get to, though I had no real problem getting to any, even the one in the back… A short extension is critical there, but after that it’s do-able.
Clean up everything as you take it apart and you should have P0300 licked..
Just about guarantee you it’s a dead coil.
Check Engine light flashes on that one and it won’t let you set the cruise, right? That’s because I thought my engine was DONE FOR after the Seafoaming when that happened. But I fixed it. Twice, as I did it twice. Once cracked one coil, once cracked two…
Salutations. – GHT
(Also, please share this post with BITOG if you like, since they, especially that Bandito440 guy, seems to think I’m jus”doing this for fun.” I DO have the ability to be helpful.)
I had a gentleman I paid to put my engine back together stop when he attempted to put an engine mount on UPSIDE DOWN. (this on my Honda Civic.) I basically had to un-do what he did, did it myself spectacularly, and ate the loss of money.
I remember doing Community Service once, and I know Recycling is a lengthy and involved process. Perhaps what they were getting at was “inefficient.”
However, I can’t help but think that any space saved in a landfill is awesome. I’m not sure how those things don’t fill up almost instantly.
Bottled water, anyone? It’s a necessary evil, as many spots the water is sub-par, but, damn.
I was going to say: “Very Carefully.” 😉
My guess would be the same as any other high-end marque, like a BMW, Mercedes or Porsche certified Tech….
Yes, I totally did not see this, but I instantly recognized that as an Infiniti I30. Looks like they took off all badging. Never seen that done on an Infiniti I30 but, ok.

Thought Supertech was produced by either Exxon Mobil, or “Warren” oil company, depending on how the bottles look.
Old, rounder containters = Warren.
Sharp, angular, wide-mouth = Exxon Mobil.Eric, you are an excellent tech. 🙂
Great video!
Question: Was the penetrating lube a mixture of ATF and Acetone? My first go-to is PB Blaster (or P’Blaster, I always called it PB Blaster) but, if that fails, I mix up some ATF and Acetone, and it has made some harder jobs kind of easy/easier, depending. Or do you go for Aero-Kroil?
Those tools seem similar to the “Name Brand” (lol, four letters and then 5 letters, hyphenated? I get it though.. trademarked names) in the sense that there is an adjustment. In action, it appeared… almost exact, to the name brand. I have even some cheaper imitations that function the same, though the quality is lacking. Not sure I’ve ever broken it, but, in time, I’m sure I’ll find something where those cheap knock-offs are simply inadequate.
Seems a good tool.
I have a question I would like to introduce into the conversation: Why do some say that “Recycling is a waste?” I don’t agree with that, I grew up in an area where we recycled, and even where I live now, we have designated Recycle days for collection, and different days for garbage. (They don’t take TVs and stuff, so a lot of them just sit there, until they basically just get moved, by people, not the garbagemen.)
Has anyone heard this argument as to Recycling being a “waste?” ..
Cool.
Though I am starting to feel like few people browse here, and even fewer reply.. (I had to post in Technician forum to get replies, and they were great ones, but my other threads are just about dead, with the exception of Eric himself) … I’m about ready to continue with engine reassembly.
This will require much focus, and will be tough for me. I did a lot today, but not sure I can continue, as it would take a lot out of me before work.
Here is the latest on the project.
