Do you mean you just took the breaker bar to unscrew the rod while fixing the bracket with a wrench/bar, and the rod turned a bit even with the washer on? And after the rod backed up a bit you had room to grab the washer with pliers?

I can access the nut with the crow foot the same way you did, but how did you unbend the lock washers?
