However, can the ball joints be pressed out without lowering the entire subframe and removing/replacing the entire control arm? I already bought the ball joints and I don’t see a reason why they can’t be.

Thanks for the info guys. It is oily looking. How about the drain plug? Any ideas on how to remove it now that I stripped it?
