To check the timing you need only to check the marks. However not trying to have a pissing contest or anything but it doesn’t sound like valves to me. Let me ask. Have you ran synthetic oil in the car? Doing this can cause the engine to sound like this. Well the good news is that the car drives fine and has good power. Unless you are willing to replace or rebuild the engine. Just turn the radio up.

How does the car drive? Sounds like the engine was ran low on oil at one point and some damage happened. If the car drives good I wouldn’t worry about it. I had a customer with an old Nissan Extera that sounded worst but but was driving fine for the last three years.

I am struggling with CA emissions myself. Is it possible for you to scan a copy of the test results? They have a low income program, the state will help with a max on $500 on repairs. Hear is a copy to the website that has helped me a bit.http://www.smogtips.com/failed-high-carbon-monoxide-CO.cfm

I’m still have this issue but found a great video that can help the form. This is a 5 part walk-through.

I would have loved to know them before. It could simply be that your intake needs to be cleaned. K&N sells a cleaner. I bet this is the issue hear. Try this and also clean the throttle body. Do you have a generic air intake. those are not the best at filtering air particles as good as the K&N is.
Brakes are supposed to get hot. Friction stops your car and friction makes heat. Jack it up and have someone press on the brake. Release the brake while turning the wheel. They should turn as soon as the brake is released. There should only be slight drag.
If you can’t turn the wheels after the brakes are released open the bleeder on each wheel. If the fluid shoots out then something is causing the brakes to be held on. If no fluid comes out then i don’t think you have a problem.
Sound like you have nothing to worry about. More than likely the lube tech mentioned brakes hoping you would agree for him to do it.

Go to the salvage yard and get the relays, they are small enough to fit in your pocket. Bleed the coolant system.

I recommend DENSO. Replace both up and down stream. Buy them on Amazon. You can get them for half the price as compared to your local auto parts store. Got both of mine for 90, auto wanted 95 for one. I never asked but is the car stock. Do you have cold air intake. clean the throttle body. http://youtu.be/41yFXjibtLY
