Thank You for all the advice everyone! I think that I will do the thermostat if I have time, I am defiantly doing the hoses though. I don’t think that I will have a problem being that I am going to use Honda parts. I use all aftermarket parts for my other vehicles, but I prefer to use genuine Honda parts on the odyssey, plus they are only a little bit more, but they are always a guaranteed fit. So I am looking at the Tru-Cool 4544 tranny cooler, and a magnafine inline filter. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I am basing my decision from what I have gathered over at the ody club forum.Oh and I drove it from Pittsburgh to Erie last weekend and it still has a horrible shimmie/vibration in the steering wheel from 60mph to 80 mph then it stops. so the new front tires did not fix it. I really do not want to drive it to Florida that way because I will most likely get carpel tunnel from it, its that bad. Thanks for all the help everyone, I can always count on the people at ETCG.
my 2005 durango 4.7 had the same problem. the problem was present from 80k to 115k where I would check the oil and it was empty! I did a compression test and basically all cylinders were at 170psi and one was at 60 psi. so from my leak down test I concluded that the rings were shot on the #6 cylinder and the head gasket blew in between an oil passage and the cylinder wall. the only time i noticed smoke was if it idled at a light of something, and when you gave it gas it blew a big puff of smoke. so at 115k I changed the engine and it doesn’t burn a drop of oil. I now use royal purple 5w-30 and change it every 3k miles.

Well I will most likely leave the thermostat alone from what you experienced. I am going to do the rad hoses, at least the upper, and I am going to replace the coolant since I’m doing the water pump/timing belt. plus the coolant has 168k on it so its 48k past due, since honda says 120k. I also believe that the rad hoses are original so I just want to be on the safe side.

Battery is new, spare tire is a good tip, I just replaced the two front tires, still vibrates, could the rears cause this. I was also thinking it might be cv axles?

My 2005 Durango had about 80k on it when it started to burn an excessive amount of oil. It would burn about 1 quart every 100 miles. A compression test verified that the rings were shot in #6 cylinder. along with a small blown head gasket. mechanic told me $3000 to rebuilt the engine. I bought an engine with 50k on it and swapped it out a few months ago and it doesn’t burn a drop of oil. I am now running royal purple 5w-30 in it and changing it every 3k miles. seems to be holding up nicely. plus no more $10 in oil every week.

So Im 16 and my parents had an 05 Dodge Durango 4.7v8, 4×4, tow package, pretty much everything I was looking for. My dad does no kind of maintenance on his vehicles whats so ever. He changed the oil in the durango every 5000 miles and put a water pump on it, and that was it, it was very reliable and never broke down. So I was given the car with 113k miles on it in late June. I did know that the engine wasn’t in very good shape, but I was assured by my dad that it was “no big deal that it burnt a quart of oil every 100 miles” which I knew was a major issue inside the engine. I did a compression test, leak down test and found that the head gasket need replaced. so I was being given a $5000 car that needed an engine. not a horrible deal in my eyes. By the way I have done all of the work on this truck listed below…
engine with 50k miles…$2000 with 2 months of my time to put it in.
tires (goodyear wranglers)…$800
fuel pump…$200
bodywork and paint…$600
parts, gaskets, etc. for engine swap…$500
slotted rotors and wagner pads all the way around…$500
4 oxygen sensors @$75 each…$300I also…
changed the tranny fluid
changed the transfer case fluid
rear diff pinion seal and fluid change
front diff fluid change
had to have someone vacuum and charge the AC from the engine swap
rebuilt the emergency brake
4 shock absorbersand I get 9 mpg, I drive about 200 miles a week, a 22 gal tank, I spend $80 a week on gas, and $300 a month on insurance.
So the truck is about to hit 119k miles and in a 6k mile period I have spent…a little over $5000 in parts!
the truck still needs…
2 CV axles and 2 front hub assembly’s
alternator is going bad
I have to figure out why it has a hard downshift every once in a while
power steering pump, and i will probably replace the steering rack when I do the front drive lineSo yes I know SUV’s are expensive, and yes the durango will be running like a watch in no time, but used cars can be a good deal, just don’t buy them from my dad. haha stay dirty everyone!
and I know what you mean Eric about people with 4×4 thinking their exempt from road conditions, this is what my friends truck looks like that hydroplaned and hit 4 trees. I was the first one there and it was not pretty. He is OK though, I don’t know how but hes is. his head went though the driver side window. he wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

Attachments:I know the feeling of being used, In the past year I’ve built my dads 12×22 deck for him, laid tile in the first floor of his house, changed the engine in his 94 buick, and god knows what else, im 17 and he complains everyday about how he has been paying for my car insurance for the past 2 months because I cant afford it right now because the 05 durango he gave me, I guess it was supposed to pay for all the work I did for him, needed an engine and I basically had to dump the money I had saved up for winter into it. He isn’t a bad dad, but he doesn’t respect any of the things I do for him.

I love the feeling of helping others, I cut grass in the summer and every time i finish a lawn its not the $40 its the smile and thank you I get. I don’t know why but I think its more rewarding than the money. I’m 17 now but 4 years ago I was buying a snow blower off of craigslist from a guy in a higher up neighborhood, and he wanted like $375 for the thing and I was willing to pay that, and when I gave him the money he handed me $175 back and I was like wow, you’re a complete stranger and that’s probably one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me. now that I do all the work on my vehicles if someone wants something done to their car I’ll do it, I always end up with people bringing me 5 quarts of oil and I change their oil for free, but I really like helping others. one time I was coming home from school and my neighbor flagged me down and he had been trying to start his rototiller all day and I got it running in 5 minutes, but I think its great when you help someone out because chances are that you will need help someday. 🙂
