There is something called “Mineral Oil Mentality” where people believe thicker oil offers more protection, which is not true.
Oil pumps move fluid, thicker fluids require more power to move them, which leads to unnecessary heat. All transmissions now are using a lighter fluid (Low Viscosity) in just about everything from a car to heavy equipment. Field trials have proven that lighter fluids are more efficient and just as reliable as the heavy grades used in the past.
There is something called boundary lubrication and a good quality oil will prevent wear even if there is no pressure between moving parts. The lighter oils get there quicker and have less drag from churning oil between moving parts. So you can see there is less power wasted by the heavier fluids and wear is not a concern unless fuel dilution is a problem.

now three tow trucks later, I can make it only a few blocks before it kills, the problem is getting worse. any more suggestions before I ignite this thing and push it into the lake??
This is why I do not like Ford products. A guy told me if you can work on a Ford you can fix anything :woohoo:
Update:

If you want a nice tone get a catback system from summit racing or jegs with a 70 series on it. I like the sound of no cat with the dual 40 series flowies.
have you thought about running with a full pipe no muffler and just the cats? its not that loud and might give you the sound you like. And its free.
With no muffler, I would want a resonator to keep the echo down
Cops pulled me once for running a straight cat on a test run, it was toned down but still loud.
on my 88 ive run stock, a flowmaster 70 series, cherry bombs, and now 40 series dual. I work on commercial trucks and can be held accountable if fault is determined after an accident… I will not rebuild any air valve because the customer thinks it will work and is too cheap to buy a guaranteed part. :stick:

Thanks, I am trying to buff out minor scratches and oxidation to keep it looking good. I am also looking at using a paint sealant, just wanted to pass that along.

I send my ATF to Blackstone labs and have them work up a report for oxidation and wear metals. If its dirty, you can also particle count the fluid. Since you are towing, you need to run synthetic fluid for better heat transfer and reliability.
Allison 1000 requires synthetic fluid to remain in their warranty. It just shows that the manufacturers recognize the need for synthetic oil in their equipment.

I understand the temp sensor will put this trans into lockup if it starts to get hot as a means to cool it down. You might have issues with one of the temp sensors or the TCC solenoid. This is common stuff for just about any electronic transmission.
You also mentioned the brake pedal, the switch also kicks out the TCC solenoid. Someone else mentioned the TPS and those are a known failure with GM trucks. If the fluid smells burnt, you may have a cooling problem with the engine in addition to the lockup issue. Remember, for every 20 degrees past 190 in the tranny, it shortens its life by half.

Definitely need some education to do basic service like the G1 cert. If you want to be a real technician, plan on getting more education than a doctor, I mean you have to keep learning as technology evolves 😆
I have worked with guys who think education is crap and those are the guys who are stuck doing tire work and other insignificant jobs. The days of breaker points and analog systems are ancient history.
Eric, I like what you are doing here
