the vtc actuator can be an issue one europeon accords especially of this age it is quite possible that this is your problem however if you do take it to a dealer for diagnosis and repair ask them to check the timing chain guides and tensioner at the same time as trying to diagnose the vtc actuator as at lower tempretures on cold start the timing chain guides or tesioner could make a similar sound to the vtc actuator
i hope this is helpful to you

as college man stated above with a slight over bore the ecm/ ecu should adjust the air fuel ratio just fine because the difference in overall cubic capacity would be small however with a larger more extreme over bore the ecm/ecu may need to be mapped/re tuned to suit the new larger cubic capacity
hope this is some useful information for you

inside the unit will most likely be either metal oxide varistor protection or diode protection or both and possible even a surface mount fuse it would be tiny and most likely not labled hope to be some help please update with your findings

there will most likely be some reverse polarity protection inside the units however it is unlikely that these will be replaceable by your self as they will probably not even look anything like a fuse i would suggest that you google search for a repair company that deals with these units to recondition them and phone that company to explain what happened and go from there im sorry that this isn’t an easier answer but in my opinion it is probably your best option to get this fault repaired

i would recomend looking into this further as i run two 1250watt rms subwoofers and a 5000watt rms amplifier on 0awg wiring in my 2006 ford focus on the standard alternator and it is just fine and i belive its only a 90 amp alternator so look into whats causing the issue further before spending money on a new alternator however a good company i can recommend is xspower alternators they stock upgrade alternators for most vehicles and will be more than happy to find one to fit your vehicle if u give them a call i hope this helps
