I don’t think he ever mentioned missing coolant. Far as I can tell from the topic it’s just not circulating correctly. Combustion gas in the coolant would be a good thing to check for though. Over a long period of time would combustion gas turn the coolant a different color? Say from lime green what?
When you flushed the heater core everything flowed out nicely from both inlet/outlet I assume. You flushed in both directions through the core right? Why it’s now acting like it has an obstruction is weird. It’s possible the obstruction isn’t in the heater core but in the hose leading to the heater core from the engine. Sounds like it’s time to do another drain and check out the flow through the heater core as well as the hoses. Obstruction has to be there somewhere you just haven’t found it yet.

The manuals are neat and do include quite a lot from the factory manual but they aren’t pure digital copies of the hardcopy manuals. At least not for the Mazda manuals I looked at. I guess the best way to describe these are as “modified manuals”. If you don’t have a manual at all they are very handy indeed. They do include a good portion of factory manual pages, scans, and procedures. Just wanted to let people out there know that if you are looking for a factory manual these are not them. The link is really appreciated. I enjoyed reading a couple of the modified manuals.
Great to hear. Sounds like you’re on the path to heat. I had no idea air in the cooling system could be such a pain. I’ve learned a lot from your issue Digger. Thanks for continually updating us it’s good stuff. Do you still need part of the rad blocked off for all of this or are you now able to run without it?

He did test the thermostat with a microwave and thermometer and it operated to specs. After something happened he decided to test the new thermostat. I believe he tested the original and a replacement and came to the conculsion that both were working correctly so he returned the new one.
Just a general question here that I don’t think I’ve ever seen answered. How would you go about diagnosing a clog in one of the engine passages? Say a broken water pump fin just for the sake of argument. Is there a coolant pressure test that can be done? I’ve seen you hook up a vacuum pump and use that to add pressure to find the leak near the radiator cap in one. Would that be a suggestion maybe digger can follow up on if removing the dash comes up with nothing?

This is above my head. I have absolutely no idea why he’s not getting heat. The 626 has bypass hoses so that coolant still circulates even if the thermostat hasn’t opened up. I imagine most engines has a similar design to help the car warm up during winter faster. His thermostat is obviously working right otherwise the heat wouldn’t disappear so fast while driving. Coolant temp sensor I believe he’s replaced. Sounds like for whatever reason that the engine isn’t able to produce enough heat to offset the -30F ambient temp while driving. I’m in FL so have no idea what’s that is like or what would cause that. Hope you get this fixed bro. -30F ain’t no joke.
Oh good lord I forgot that your car is a 1991 there for a second sorry, my fault. I’ll delete all of that junk since it just makes this topic unecessarily longer my apologies. I have a 1988 factory manual on the way but mine is the real deal paperback. Will be interesting to see if there are differences between your digital version and my paperback.
Highmount is a brake light so it’s connected to the brake light circuit. Check the high mount harness wires. They can come loose. Since your brake lights work that’s actually a good sign that the entire circuit hasn’t shorted out and should be fairly easy to track down. The license plate light might just be a burnt bulb? Unless the license plate light gets its power from the high mount (unlikely) my guess is you are dealing with 2 separate issues.
Don’t forget at the end of the Unclogging A Heater Core video; If you still don’t have heat after trying all the steps, hook everything up, take it out some place safe, and just floor it.
Also a neat video I came across recently thanks ot Spelunkered that might have bearing on spotting recurring air in the heater core issues.

Not sure about the bleeder valve. I know the 93-02’s don’t have one. You have to bleed the air through the radiator cap while running the engine at 2k rpm. It’s best to have the front end up on ramps to elevate the radiator cap above the IAC at least for the 4th gen. Not sure about the 3rd gen. I have a 3rd gen 1988 factory manual coming in this week actually. I’ll scan anything you need. As for the radiator cap it couldn’t hurt to pick up another one from the local auto parts store for a couple bucks. Look up the specs for the cap in the Haynes manual. It should at least get that one right. 😉 I’d guess at 13 psi / 0.9bar.
I was talking about the control module yeah. Make sure the control unit isn’t the cause. Switching modes, fan settings, temp settings, etc.. The control module itself can fail especially on the older cars where they use mechanical switches instead of electronic buttons and such.
Might want to let the car cool down before adding coolant after a spirited drive. Even Eric isn’t immune to getting a face full of coolant but steaming hot coolant is something that can change your life. I had a neighbor who burned his face really bad taking a tractor rad cap off while he was working it in the field. Some mistakes follow you for the rest of your life. Let the car cool first. In -30 weather that shouldn’t take too long.
