I know there are always possibilities i just hope I find something. I would do it but it has been rather wet and damp and I would not want to leave the engine exposed to that for time when the heads are sent to get machined.
I would prefer do it myself but I just don’t have access to a garage and an engine lift to do it and was wondering how bad they are trying to rip me off. The other problem is there are not many places local that will even do a head gasket job so the places that do take advantage of that. I am planning on doing the water pump and timing belt and pulleys myself since the water pump is another hour of labor and parts and 2 hours for timing belt and pulleys. I swear I live in “RIP OFF CITY” for a head gasket job with water pump and timing belt and pulleys and tensioner i was told to would be close to 3500 before tax.
sorry about forgetting to give car details. I currently have a 2010 subaru impreza 2.5 sohc it has 127 k on it i got it at 121 k. I am trying to save enough so i can send it somewhere a head gasket change in the area starts around 2 k and up plus the car will have to be towed to where it is going. I have not found anything else last oil change was clean nothing besides used oil no metal shavings or coolant. oil is still full and clean on dipstick. no outside leaks of any kind. spark plugs from cylinder 3 and 4 both wet but smelled like gas. and other then that the “blue moon” misfire code normally cylinder 1 on my code reader. I also don’t like the “unknown” of a used engine i was think more of a reman engine but that pushes the engine well unto the 3-4 k price for just an engine. any other questions just ask
anything is possible i just highly doubt what the dealer told me since the more i look into things it seems like nothing was really done i was just told it was. wouldn’t a cracked head or block have caused more issues then a little loss of power though? i know the head gaskets need to be replaced but there is no outside leaking on either side under the heads. it doesn’t burn any oil and no white smoke and no oil/coolant mixing. the squirting happened when i was hand cranking looking for markings on the timing belt. I am mostly just trying to figure out if i should fix or try to replace the engine cost wise.
I doubt it was done today I took the smaller side of the timing cover off so I could check the belt it is very worn and I could not see any markings on the belt at all. I marked the belt so I knew that I went through one full turn through after turning it for about ten mins by hand. I saw coolant squirt out of cylinder 3 and heard gurgling noises when I was turning it over. I only noticed that the car did not have the power it should have i had a 2006 and it had a lot more get up and go and this is the same engine in the 2010 the 06 also ran smoother then the 10. I also got random misfire codes and some starting issues mostly when it was damp out. I guess it got worse over time i think the thing that stopped the car from really running anymore was when the head gaskets failed but since when i got it i was told both head gaskets, water pump and the timing belt and pulleys were all changed which with everything I think i was lied too.
i am going to check the timing belt tomorrow if the weather allows i checked to make sure it was still intact but it looks very worn on the smooth side. I currently can not start the car and do not have the tool to do a leak down test. I did find oil on the bottom two bolts from the timing belt cover. I have had the car for less then 7 k miles now it is about 127 k i got it around 121 k. I have changed the oil 3 times since i got it. I was told that the head gaskets, timing belt and water pump were all changed before I got it but with the issues i am having i doubt it. I have changed now the radiator, radiator cap, both upper and lower radiator hoses, plugs and wires since i got the car since they where not in the best of shape. any other questions ask i would prefer not to have to come up with money for the engine if i don’t need to. I did get misfire codes at random times but was told by the dealer and the shop he works with it must have been some “bad” gas.
the mileage is about 127k. i was told but i don’t believe that the headgaskets were replaced less then 7 k ago. I don’t have any oil loss or coolant loss besides when it has overfilled the over flow tank. when i last drove the car everything was normal no loss of power no smoke and no odd sounds. the only leak i know of is in the fourth cylinder and it is small. And what would be the chances of both head gaskets going at the same time? I am more looking if i should change the head gaskets and see what is wrong or should i change the engine?
well from all the double talk i am pretty sure i am being lied to by the small dealer i got it from. either the place he deals with for preparing cars lies to him or he is in the loop. the place i had to take it too when i had a problem just after i got the car told him they put a new radiator in and they never did it still had the insulation that is on a subaru radiator from when the car is built in a factory no one even a subaru dealer replaces it if a new radiator is installed.
i am planning on looking elsewhere for it to get done bugs me more that the place that worked on the car before i got it seems to have not done the work that was said they did. I plan on also finding out if the head gaskets are from subaru since i was told they where changed and i am doubting they have been i have not put on even 5000 miles since they where done with overheating issues popping up over the whole time but not on any normal basis. and since i got it with over 100,000 miles no one cares since it is passed the lemon law rules in new york
the head gaskets from subaru are according to the local website between 50-60 each i found a kit from fel-pro for a complete head gasket repair kit for 140 and 15 for the head bolts. like i said the estimate that i got was from a subaru dealership so i assume that they would have a good idea since this happens. but from the website for oem parts the parts for a head gasket change comes to closer to 350 in parts
the 8-10 hours i was told was from subaru to just replace the head gaskets with out any resurfacing being done. they said it would be $600 more if timing belt and water pump needs to be replaced. they did not give much in details outside of a time frame besides if they found anything besides head gaskets it would cost more. it is a 2010 subaru impreza 2.5l sedan non-turbo.
it is possible but today the overflow overfilled and i block tested again and it came back positive. Dear old subaru dealer near me said it would be about $3000 to get head gaskets done with out resurfacing the heads or doing anything else. ie water pump or anything else
the coolant is clean i have flushed the system more then once and replaced the coolant after each thermostat change. and like i have said besides the temp light coming on have had no sign of a head gasket leak. No smoke or dirty coolant nor oil block tester comes up normal which is used correctly by drawing fluid out of radiator low enough so when the engine is hot to check from where the radiator cap normally is. i have checked the fluid to make sure it is good and bought another bottle to make sure. All i get is when squeezing it it goes a little lighter blue but once the bubbles in the fluid are gone it is dark blue again. I have no compression problems spark plugs are new and the ones i took out where clean just old and autolites and not ngk. also from what i know is if it is a head gasket leak it normally would be worse the longer you drive due to heat and shorter trips seem to prompt the problem more but it also is not an all the time problem and once you have a head gasket problem they don’t have a “come and go” problem.
no i have not lost any coolant that i can tell the radiator is always full when i have checked it
yes i have and at most the fluid changes from dark blue to a little lighter blue the only time i got a green was because the fluid bubbled up and got sucked in. I checked the fluid to make sure that it was working by putting it near the exhaust and it changed bright yellow
