“Back in the day” I would clean spark plugs; I agree that I wouldn’t do it now. Plugs with platinum or such plating would lose the plating. They are cheap enough, last long enough, replacement is the way to go. Sometimes I remove good plugs to do a leakdown check or to look at them as a diagnostic. If they are gasket type (not taper seat) I use fresh gaskets if I am putting the existing plugs back in.
… Sadly grease fittings are rarely used anymore. “sealed for life units” are an absolute joke.
Yup. Lube dries up -> end of life. I am on good terms with my parts place. The guy was selling me something with a “Lifetime warranty.” I asked him how that works. He said “If it breaks, we send Enrico from the back room out with a big pickle fork to end your life.” Also don’t like “maintenance free batteries.”

Just taking sides here… To show support I bought a bottle of Gumout yesterday. Hope that the company profits surge up, and somebody wearing a tie tells ’em it is because of your video. Haven’t decided whether to put it into my wife’s car or my truck. Thank you for the videos and the site.

Another problem I’ve had with shops. My ’04 silverado left the factory with 7 lube points… 4 ball joints, 2 outer tie rod ends, drive shaft spline. Several different “quick lube” type shops I found that whoever did the work assumed no lube points and didn’t bother. With new U joints I now have more lube points.

Tx, will check them out. My u joints are factory; to replace them I will have to burn out the plastic stuff they used to lock them in. Maybe saved ’em all of 10 seconds labor on the assembly line.

Just a note of support for Eric. You clearly stated that it is a paid commercial. Some people complaining that you sold out to “the man?” No. I have done things because I got paid to do them; some of these things probably wouldn’t occur to me otherwise. I don’t know if the stuff actually does what it claims, but I’m gonna run a bottle of it anyway. I have no intention of doing a “before and after.” BTW the stuff has been around forever.

Quick comment about coolant… seems that it tastes good to critters and it is poisonous. Please dispose of it properly and don’t leave an open bucket sitting out while you go out to get a new gasket for your drain plug. Don’t wanna come home and find out you no longer have a dog.

My brother and I have been working together since we were kids; cars, trucks, motorcycles, boat building. One of his favorite tools is his “thinking stool.” When things start going ugly he pours himself a cup of coffee, sits on the stool, and practices the “thousand yard stare” until he gets a good idea.
