I think you should buy something safe like a Nissan/Toyota SUV or a Volvo/SAAB. In my opinion Volvos are the best cars for learning drivers – safe, reliable, comfortable. For 5000 you can buy a decent S60. Buy if your son wants to be the cool kid go for an older volvo with a turbo engine and install a BOV

The steak knife made my day πŸ™‚ I’m thinking really hard, but still – can’t figure out how to check the oil level with a knife πŸ™

That reminds me of a story my friend told me some time ago. He was working at a gas station. A lady walks in and buys 5 liters of oil….5 min later she buys another 5l of oil. The third time she wanted to buy more oil my friend asked her whats going on. She replied – “My housband told me to regulary check the oil level and there is no oil in the engine”. What happened is – She had a E38 BMW and after opening the filling cap she didn’t see any oil πŸ˜€ so she put 10l of oil in it so the engine was filled all the way to the valve cover πŸ™‚

After a test drive I noticed the brakes feel a bit ‘spongy’. I replaced the broken lever and made the customer angry – “Why did you do that? it was fine ! ”

Some time ago my friend asked me if i can take a look on his SAAB. He said “It only goes up to 160km/h and runs weird”
The spark plugs were melted, compression test shown 17-0-0-19. This is what I found under the head πŸ™‚

you can’t judge the the condition of the timing belt just by visual inspection. Even a good looking belt can break.
The key components are the bearings in the pulleys and the water pump. If they wear out – the belt wears out.
I did a timing belt job on my friends clio II 8V last month and it costed in total 200$ (parts + labor)

On cars the voltage regulator is usualy in the alternator.

As long as the transmission doesn’t run dry it should be OK.
The most popular method is to drain the transmission, replace the filter(if it has one), refill with the amount you drained and then flush the rest disconnecting the return hose from the A/T oil cooler and pouring fresh fluid. IMPORTANT NOT TO OVERFILL ! There are tons of videos about flushing AT on YouTube.
I never flushed a transmission using the special flushing machine, so can’t say anything about that method.
