This is a great thread. If anyone is still in High School (or anyone else who hasn’t gone to ‘Tech school yet), I recommend serving in the Military first. Get that new Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, and any “kicker” they will throw at you.

A former USMC guy I know in class drives an older Benz 0.1 Miles round trip from the fancy-pants Dorms, to the Diesel Campus every day. He’s on a FULL ride for tuition, books, tool and rent deposits, then, he uses his living expense checks to pay rent, buy food, gas, insurance, cell-phone, and has a substantial ammount left-over at the end of a pay period that he sticks in the bank, or blows. He buys the best Groceries from the most expensive place in town too. He told me when he finishes his 16 months of school (extra 4 months for an additional class), he will have bank-rolled almost $10K from his G.I. Bill alone. He thinks the “kicker” is going to put him over $15K but he’s not sure because he opted to get that as a lump-sum at graduation. On top of that, he works full-time. All-in-all, he’s going to leave school with $30K+ in the bank, whereas the rest of us are going to be broke and have $26,500 in tuition, plus the 10 years of interest at about 8%. He’s making out like a fat cat.

I wish I read the fine-print on my Discharge papers. I fucked myself out of a better deal than the Marine is getting. They woo’d me with things like: “Man, you’re gonna be sitting back home (sign here), chasing girls (sign here), drinking Margaritas (Innitial here), eating steaks (sign here), and living the life (Innitial here).”

When it was all said and done, I got screwed royally without any KY jelly, and they couldn’t even buy me a drink before they did it. I should be sitting here on a Government ride, bank-rolling $35 G’s or more.

Moral of the story: READ *EVERYTHING* you sign, kids.

Hate to “bump” an old thread, but I really want to buy some ETCG Tekker Drivers!

There needs to be a “Tag Eric” button on here. Wherein, if you like a thread, you can click that button, and Eric recieves notification. Only one click though. The poor guy doesn’t need 75Million emails all saying that everyone likes one particular thread. One message per “liked” thread is plenty.

                    I’ll go suggestion box that^

My dad had a 67 Malibu all through the 80s. Beautiful Blue with Black Vinyl top. 327, M21 WR, Hurst shift kit, and 12 Bolt Moser 4:11 True posi with 33 spline axles. TQ Thrust II wheels. He swapped the Rochester Q-jet for a 650 Holley and to this day, swears it was his worst Automotive decission ever. The Rochester had mechanical choke and he said: “The Primaries in that God-damn thing were as big as a fucking Coke can! I could barely keep the tires from spinning when I did a 1-2 shift.”

Old dad had his fun and put in a Mallory Dual-Point Ignition system. On our move from Kanoga Park in Los Angeles County up to Everett and eventually Bothell, WA, the car made it 100 miles, and the points in the distributor went out. It made the remainder of the journey and lasted as a daily driver for several months with a Match-Book in there. Then in 90, the rear end grenaded, so dad put in a Buick 10 Bolt 4:10 True posi. He sold it in late 90 or early 91 to make way for the 32 Plymouth 3 Window Coupe.

I wish he still had the 67 and he wishes he would have kept it and BUILT the 327 and put in a Rock Crusher then found a newish 12 bolt 4:88. The $12K that went into the Deuce Coupe would have made one H3LL of a good 327!

His dream has always been a 67 Chevelle SS 427 Convertible. Well, it was his dream until I started researching the (surprise) build project. I found out the only TRUE Chevelle SS in 67 was the 396.

I plan to build it, and let my dad drive it for a few years as my way of saying: “Thanks, dad. Thanks for getting me into cars.” I’m going to build the 375HP 396 (L-78, right?) with ARP fasteners throughout. Rock Crusher, and 3:73 True Posi. Dad is 56 years old, add in the 15-20 years from now when I can finally finish it, and he’d get hurt in a 283 lol. I plan on tricking him into helping me assemble the engine though. Haul the parts to his house and say: “Dad, I got a buddy who needs this thing ASAP and I can’t do it fast enough by myself. Help me out for old times’ sake? Come on, it’ll be just like when I was in diapers, banging on pistons with a plastic hammer.”

I am considering building the whole car to Factory specs, except put in a completely late-model interior and BCM. I figure electric seats, mirrors, bells, and whistles will be better for an old man. No back seat though. Why bother? It’ll be me and dad, cruising. If not, then Mom and Dad getting groceries. It will be black with red racing stripes, and red interior. I like red on black. Looks hot.

Mad props to the original thread poster: Hondaslave for posting a killer story. Points deducted for the sad ending. Shoulda kept it. DON’T let this one go just yet! I know it’s none of my business, but finances and economy be D@mn3d!! You only live once, boss. At least hold onto it until you can scrounge up enough Pesos for that next part. And then hold onto it until you have the Denaro to buy the next part. And the Euros for the one after that.

Everyone I have ever known who has sold their Detriot Iron regrets the sale. IDK, just food for thought, brother.

OH, and I regret that the only picture of the Malibu that dad has is a tattered one that I keep in my wallet.

                      Thoughts?

                      ADVICE?!?!

As my NCO used to say: “Don’t thank me, the REAL heroes are 6 feet under.”

But thank you both. What an honor to have ETCG himself post on my thread!

MAC, Cornwell, and MATCO have similar deals. I found Ingersoll Rand tools through a website called http://www.abc-tool.com I think that was it. IR for up to 60% off and it was legit. Lots of stuff had the high end discount. I *THINK* Sears does discounts through online only. Not sure. They might have stopped it, idk.

I say F Snap-On. They are over-priced luxury tools. You don’t need them. Further more, MAC, MATCO, Craftsman, Snap, and Blue-Point ALL have their sockets and I believe a few other tools made by DANAHER Corp. Can’t remember where I saw that. Cornwell has video on their website that shows how they make ALL of their own tools in their own facilities.

The only things I would considder from Snap is the ETHOS scan tool because NOTHING competes with it, and the VERUS I think is their top-of-the-line Diagnostic tool. Again, nothing really competes with it.

I want to work at GM though. They have the old Tech II and the new MDI (is that what it’s called?). Those tools are bad @$$

The tools don’t make the Technician, The Technician makes the tools. My friend’s dad has probably $50K invested in ALL Snap-On at work. I don’t think he even has a Blue-Point Tire Gauge. But I’ve seen him work magic with Shuck’s (Now O’Reilly’s), Husky, NAPA, and other junk.

Buy something with a Lifetime warranty. Even if it’s outsourced to China, you can get a replacement with no questions asked.

I have almost all Craftsman. I did however, get a smokin’ student discount on a MATCO MDTECHPLUS DMM. About 55% off. WyoTech was NOT happy when they heard that I went behind the back of their beloved Snap-On.

I *WAS* going to buy a Snappy ETHOS. I walked into the lunch room and there was Mr. Snappy. I says: “How much for an ETHOS, fully decked out?” He tells me: “They’re about $1250.” So I asked about the discount: “Around $750-800.” He tells me. “Plus you get a $400 Snappy gift card.” I says: “I’m not interested in the gift card. Put it towards the ETHOS?” And he said: “Can’t do it. You have to use it to purchase more Snappy.”

I went back the next day and asked: “How much is that ETHOS, if I pay you CASH?”
“Well, depending on your credit score, I should be able to find a good interest r…”
“I’m paying you in *CaSh*. How much?”
“$700. But I suggest you order it before graduation to get the latest software updates and…”
“I don’t need 2012 model year stuff. H3ll, most 2008 stuff is under warranty.”

LONG story short, I’m looking for a competitor’s tool.

Let me know when you grow into Chevy. If you want to work on your shit ALL of the time, go buy a Found On Road Dead.

You know one of the best things about Chevies? Parts are a dime a dozen. You go down to the super market. You go into the bread isle. They’ve got your White, Wheat, Cylinder Heads, Bagels, Rhye, etc.

The dairy isle has your Milk, butter, Pistons, Cheese, margarine, etc.

The Deli has ham, bacon, Valves, black forest ham, chicken, etc.

Try that with a Fix Or Repair Daily.
