Allright, so i highly doubt the car is able to detect a problem with valves. It gave you the misfire codes, and that’s it. It’s mechanic’s job to find out why is the engine misfiring. Correct me if i’m wrong.

If you can’t check your compression (or don’t want to pay for it or whatever), I suggest this : Not sure if your car has a clean flood mode, but even if it had, it still would be better to when the key is off, pull out the fuel pump fuse or relay (or disable the fuel somehow, these two are the easiest to do). Open the hood, have somebody in the car to crank the engine for you while you record the cranking sound on video (and post it here of course). I’m sure that we can determine if your car has no compression from the sound of the crank.
I actually found out what’s wrong. I took the valve cover off and 9 of 16 rockers fell off. No valve problems, just need to put those rockers back on.
Are you only getting p0302 and p0304 and no VVT related codes?

As much as you may not want to hear this; based upon what you have said, there is a good chance you have bent valves… A compression test can help you determine this rather quickly… A very outside chance is a possibility of the chain jumping, but that is very outside…

          -Karl
I remember misfire codes for 2 and 4, and another code for multiple misfires detected. No valve codes, I’ll check again when I get back to my car later.

are you getting oil in the breather tube and intake?
Oil in the PCV hose and intake manifold. I took the manifold off last week, was holding around a cup of oil. Car burns 1 quart every 2000 miles.
Okay, there is a TSB for your vehicle pertaining to excessive oil consumption.

The repair is a ECM re-flash to update the software.

I recommend going to the dealer and asking them about TSB 0145-08
Already been reflashed for about 10,000 miles. Very little, if no change at all.

So in that case. Don’t do it. 😛 Alright, on to figuring out other reasons as to why my engine burns oil. Oil control rings are the next suspect.

I might have to do that.. I’d just like to get rid of this stupid problem. I don’t want to worry about oil levels..
If it were me, I would try the 5-30 for 2k miles or so and see what happens, if the consumption gets under control, your good. I have heard of people doing a seafoam treatment to the old 1ZZ-FE 1.8 engine and delaying the oil consumption problem, but your engine is different from that one (the piston ring lubrication holes were too small and would get clogged on that engine)…. I just don’t suspect a ring issue on your engine….yet…

Sounds good. We’re the second owner to this car, the first 30K were from another person. Judging by the scratches, cracked front bumper, and other small things, I don’t think they took good care of the car. Maybe something is built up in the engine.. No idea.

I’m kinda curious how a ECM flash can change oil consumption!

Do they have some way of lowering the manifold vacuum so the PCV system sucks less hard on the crankcase?
Since this is a VVT engine, the valve timing can be adjusted by the re-programming of when the VVT actuator activates… I am not for certain why this SHOULD help, but sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t….

It has been postulated that the changing of the valve timing lowers the pressure in the crankcase and temperature which helps the oil not to vaporize as much…. Don’t quote ME on that though…. 😛

If it were me, I would run 5-30…. Toyota did the 5-20 to meet CAFE standards in the US and the rest of the world runs it on 5-30….

                                  just my 2 cents…

                                  -Karl
I’ll try it out, but let’s say the oil control rings aren’t seated correctly, would there be any way to re-seat them? I’d prefer to not tear apart the entire engine. I’ve seen some people spray some seafoam deep-creep into the cylinder with the spark plugs removed, and let it sit overnight. I doubt this does anything though..
