i went to change my starter due to a bad coil and it not starting about once every 3 tries till i hit it. got a new one took the old one out. didnt think anything of it, left the battery connected. as im tightening the positive on the starter, it hits the fuel line (didnt know it) gas goes spraying and a small fire starts for a split second. i thought it was the oil catching fire lol. i screamed like a girl for about 3 seconds till the fire extinguished.my brother was helping me with it as well and he was laughing his ass off while i was under my explorer scared shitless for a few seconds. this time we dissconnected the battery. get the starter all set connect the battery go to start it up and we see fuel pouring out. shut it off and found there was a hole about 2-3mm in diameter. had to take the whole fuel hose set out and replace a portion of it. about 2 hours trying to fix it.
i was doing an oil change took the oil out, and oil filter. put new one in and new oil. i go to look at the old oil filter to find that the OLD seal and the NEW seal are both on the same oil filter i just put in, which is now full of oil. i was hoping that it wouldnt spray oil and i would have to take it off and remove one. yep, it did and i had to remove the seal and replace about a quart or two of oil back into it.
lesson learned. remove battery when working on the electrical parts of the vehical, and make sure you take the seal off the oil filter. good times to look back at as well as a good story.
yes. sadly you are reading it right. last oil change about 50,000miles ago. with the new/newer engine in it, its gona get changed much more frequently. i wasent the one that went and got the car so i dont know what was wrong with it. but more than likly one of the rod bearings got too hot and got scored too much.

we put it in the shop yesterday. they said it would be better to put an engine in from the scrap yard due to the cost it would be to rebuild the engine would cost more than another engine. sadly, they said it would be like $2400….. i looked on the site and it said the closest one would be like 130 miles away.

that is very true. we were going to take it to a shop and have them deal with it. for the main reason i dont got the tools to take the engine out and rebuild the bottom half of the engine. plus it would probably be done much better if a shop done it.

thank you for posting the videos. you were 100% correct about the rod bearings. i took it up to advance auto parts and they told me that the sound is coming from the lower half of the engine. i put some locus oil stabilizer stuff in it, and it seems like it lowered the sound of the upper half of the engine. but the knocking is still there from one of the rod bearings. i used that exact technique to find out which piston had the problem and found out which one it was from the 3rd video you posted. i dont know how badly damaged it is, but ill be calling a couple places tomarrow for prices. thank you again!

oh, i know quite a bit about mechanics, i just don’t want to take it off because i don’t think that the knocking is coming from the rod bearings. a couple of my friends know much more about it than me, and they say it sounds like its a rocker for the valves.

oh i fully understand that. i didn’t think the oil was nowhere near that low untill today. if i knew it was that low, i would have put oil in it and changed it already.
is there anything else that you could think of that i could test to see if it could be something else?

okay, is there a way i could tell if the knocking sound is coming from the bottom half of the engine, or the top? and okay. i might do that tomarrow, but i dont want to over step it. there was oil in it, but there may have been maybe a quarter inch of oil at the bottom of the dipstick. when we changed the oil, there had to have been maybe a bit more than a quart of oil in the engine?
also, if i do drop the oil pan, will anything come out? like oil pump or anything else that could be in there? obviously oil will come out, but any parts that i need to be aware of or anything?
