I would not touch it because it might not just be a head gasket because you said they used a very heavy weight they may covering up rod bearing noise or lifters would be the most likely you just dont know what you might fine the only way I would buy it is if it was very cheap hope this help good luck to you and your son have a great day.
From what I hear you can I had a friend that had to replace a head gasket on a caviler he flushed the system out very well and filled it with regular green coolant and never had a problem so my advise would be just make sure you flush the entire system out and you should be fine.

Well the wires look pretty new i bought the car in February so im not sure how old they are but i did have a code for a crank sensor a few months ago but thank you for the reply

Thank you everyone for replying I drained a flushed the syetem and replaced the themostat and bled the system the overheat is gone so thank you for your help.

It runs fine its a very random problem and I don’t think it is a time issue because there is not a performance issue but thank you for your opinion.
