Alright so I thought I posted back here, but even though I’m six months late I figured I’d post my findings on this. I did solve the problem which turned out to be an issue with the intake manifold. A metal tube from the EGR melted a hole in the intake manifold causing it to flood with coolant. Pretty happy it didn’t cause any damage to any other components. Car has been on the road since just a few days after my last post!

Got those other parts in, some new tires and an alignment. Thought it was just a rear axle bearing making noise in the back but it turns out the pinion bearings were worn so I picked up a used rear end and replaced it today along with the upper control arm for the rear (bushings were shot and clunking)

I still have some brake line connections to work on and bots to torque down tomorrow but she should be fully ready for winter by tomorrow afternoon! Hopefully I will report success.

Here’s a picture of the old axle assembly for kicks…
44 mpg?! I love diesels! I want one of these old Mercs so bad, saw a 83 300D for a steal on craigslist and just cringed that I didn’t have the money.
Yeah they all get good millage especially when you consider how old they are and how heavy they are, but this one in particular is about the smallest car they have made as well as a very small engine and a 5spd manual, which was not very common. That combined with me driving 55-65mph for millage gets me into the mid 40s.

I talked to a guy who worked at a repair shop the other day who had a 300d that he ran off filtered, used motor oil… I guess it wouldn’t matter the millage if your fuel was free! Although motor oil and waste oil seems to be very bad for the injection pumps.

Thanks Eric. I had a shop check out the steering and suspension components today and added some parts to my list. I definitely would have purchased tires after the alignment so I will reverse the order there now. Looks like this project will be put off until next week due to parts on order. I’ve got these on order:

Lower front control arms
Rear wheel bearings and seals
1 front wheel hub/bearing
Rear shocks (already replaced front)

Hope the snow isn’t bad this weekend! I’ll keep this updated as I get the parts in.

Thanks for the tip. It took a combination of wrench, heat, sawzall and hammer / chisel to get those out. The shocks in the front were completely shot. I got the lifters removed and the front brakes and shocks done today. I had to replace a caliper as well due my incompetence. I haven’t driven it yet. I’ll be checking out the rear shocks an brakes tomorrow or the next day. It should go easier since there is nothing on the springs to remove.

Well here is a quick update on this thread. After I got the information that the website was being redone I decided to hold off on updating this thread and then time just kind of slipped away, but after having my valve job done and replacing the timing pump with a used unit I have driven this car about 6000 miles and averaged over 44mpg during that time! The compression on this 28 year old engine with 262,000 miles is incredible. I’ll have to post those numbers if I can dig them up from a few months ago.

I’ll be switching over to driving my jeep for the winter and I’ll probably continue to work on this while it sits in my garage. Plenty of projects left on this one to get it to the condition. I’d like.

Thanks for the responses. Brakes are on the list for sure. Pads and rotors are about as worn as they get. Good call on the fluid changes. I will get to those as well before I need to start driving this to work for the winter. fortunately the engine and transmission seem to wor great in this car. the 4wd engages very nicely as well. Thone are the big reasons I picked this up. That and the price was right of.course.

on Monday I will remove these lifters, change out the shocks and brakes and see what its like.
