is this the car that is just a renamed GM car? if so what is the GM vehicle so i can find it. all i will really do is search google. you may have luck doing the same.
No, I think you’re mistaking my car with a geo prizm/metro or something. My esteem has a G16 motor from factory.
Took me 3 hours to install an alternator belt on a Ford Tempo. Working as quickly as I could before it got dark.

That’s a coilpack.
93-97 FS-DE has a distributor. 98-02 FS-DE has a coilpack (singular). You might be confusing the term “coil on plug” with “coilpack”. No 626 came with coil on plugs, only a distributor or coilpack. A distributor controls the firing mechanically. A coilpack does it electronically via PCM and ECU. Since you have a 98-02 it’s going to be a coilpack… unless you swapped out the engine with an older 93-97 or it’s a GLXi European variant of some sort. Since you’re in FL that’s very unlikely. You have a coilpack.
I have a coil pack.
Hey I can actually contribute to this thread:
1989 Forf Tempo
Had to change my inner tie rod so when everything was set on jacks, I went to go remove the rod and it didn’t budge. Went to a friends house to borrow a bigger wrench, lifted the car higher for more elbow room, and heaved. Tie rod came out grinding. When I looked I realized there was a safety pin or something that went through the diameter of the tie rod which I snapped and caused the pieces that were ripped off to strip the thread as it was coming out. To put on the new rod was a pain and at the end my friend sprayed the tie rod with paint so it would never come out again. Total time was 9 hours. Glad I junked it.

Change out the valve cover gasket to address the oil leaking onto the plugs. The plug seals are included on the gasket. If that’s not sealing correctly you will get a bit of oil slipping down into the plug hole. Check your PCV valve and as others have mentioned make sure you get that fuel pressure tested. If your injectors can keep up with the load due to decreased pressure it could cause issues as higher speeds. Still haven’t ruled out a coilpack issue so keep that in mind.
I don’t believe I have coil packs. I have wires hooked to an electric distributor.
February 10, 2012 at 11:00 am in reply to: 2000 Mazda 626 2.0L rpm stuttering (REHASH) at 60 mph #437749Eric the car has not been sitting, far from it. I’ll keep an eye on the plug tubes but I’ll wait to change. Kinda pricey.
DJ it only happens at speed. I won’t turn off overdrive. I’ll have my mechanic check the fuel pressure.
Why am I the only one that finds it odd to add more transmission fluid? I have a Suzuki and I never ever have to add any atf or engine oil ever. It gets its’ oil change every 3k miles and the atf I’ll do annually now but seriously, what is with all the toping off that I see at my auto parts store? Its’ not right. I checked the oil and theres not low. Excuse the rant.
February 9, 2012 at 11:00 am in reply to: 2000 Mazda 626 2.0L rpm stuttering (REHASH) at 60 mph #437745I think the problem returned – Jan 23 tuned up, last thursday I noticed it returned – about a week and a half? No I never did anything about the oil. I actually checked to see if there was oil in the new spark plugs as the car ran with the old wires for 2 days and it was dry everywhere. No leak anymore.
February 8, 2012 at 11:00 am in reply to: 2000 Mazda 626 2.0L rpm stuttering (REHASH) at 60 mph #437742The problem has returned, Not it happens around 60 mph. I replaced the Spark plugs and wires. What could it be?
Finding part for VW sucks. That’s all I know.

You will have to take the vehicle on a good drive this weekend and keep us posted.
The oil around the spark plugs and the ignition wires could be from issues with the gaskets. I would look up a valve cover gasket at an auto parts store and see if there is any spark plug tube seals that come with the kit.
This was my guess, just didn’t want to say anything. The valve cover gasket also has little rubber rings on top of the spark plug tube, I think that’s why the oils not reaching the plug part inside the engine.
Change the wire if there’s discoloration? Alright. Partsgeek.com? What is this holy place? I’ve been a rock auto kind of guy. Seems to have parts for my Esteem as well, sweet. I bought a fuel filter on amazon once, was the cheapest around and it was a Fram. I was happy.
So I guess I should green light this post then Eric? The lesson is: Don’t forget the maintenance long term maintenance like spark plugs and wires. Right?

Perhaps start with that ‘tune up’ then, most performance problems are the result of simple problems and sometimes a lack of maintenance so a good place to start with a problem like yours is with things like plugs, wires, air filters, fuel filters, etc.
Yesterday I put in the new plugs. From left to right, the spark plugs in cylinders 2 and 3 had some oil near the part where the plug wire connects, cylinder 1 was completely dry and the hole in 4 had oil on the valve cover. I have an idea of what could cause it but I won’t say, I’ll let the educated community tell me. Wires seemed fine, some discoloring near the end towards the spark plug, a rust color, but not that bad. Well I’m proud to say my Mazda reached 60 no problem, had to test in 5pm highway traffic so not a lot of open road there. How odd considering the old plugs looked like they had normal wear. If you have ever noticed the back of a Haynes manual, my spark plug looked like the top-most photo, a little whiter and the filament a little blacker but still. Oh well. I’m not going to green light this post yet because I don’t feel like the problem is solved, this can’t be it. I think I just got lucky. What do you all say?

Also to add, when was the last time the vehicle has a tune up?
The car was bought used and has been owned for a year now.
4 months ago there was the said transmission oil change (did not change the filter though)
Periodic 10-40 oil changes
Air filter
I’m about to change the spark plugs and wires soon. I looked at the plugs 2 months ago out of curiosity and they were a bit black, kinda burnt.Hey I was reading around other site (gasp) and I was wondering if driving with overdrive gear off and seeing if the problem still occurs would mean anything. What do you all think?

Issues under engine load tend to be ignition related.

The above video may be of some assistance to you that Eric made.
When was the last time the vehicle had a tune up?
Any CEL?
About 2 or 3 months ago the transmission oil was changed. I changed the engine oil and filter a month ago. Video link did not work by the way. What’s CEL?
