It’s been just over a year since I put new OEM shocks on the car. It was driving better but 8000KM later it feels like it did before I changed them out. The car wobbles side to side, too much lean when cornering, extremely rough ride more so on the drivers side, visibly I can see the car leaning on the driver’s side. The car often hops over bumps in the road. Sometimes I can hear a clunk from the rear. Honda replaced the rear stabilizer bar bushing and one of the links. The sound went away after that but it has since returned.
Perhaps it’s time to find another TL.
New control arm and steering knuckle have been installed on the left front. I had an alignment done today and the print out tells me that the caster angle is off. With the wrong parts installed on this side it was exactly in spec. What would cause this and the right rear camber to be off?
Attachments:Update:
After taking another look at the car this week I discovered that the front drivers side stabilizer link was the wrong part. I changed that out only to find out that it would not fit in the lower control arm. I replaced the lower control arm and guess what… the lower ball joint on the steering knuckle doesn’t fit in the lower control arm. I will be replacing the steering knuckle on Tuesday when the part arrives. Whoever did the repairs on this car after the accident didn’t put the correct parts in it.
The dealer replaced the drive axel and the vibration has gone away. They did made me pay for the part but gave it to me at cost which I guess is better than nothing.
Eric:
The car currently has the Michelins MXM4 pilot super sport tires which I believe is what it came with from the factory. I did a visual inspection of the front suspension and found that the middle bushing on the front subframe is cracked in half all the way around (drivers side). Also the compliance bushing on this side looks like it is in need of replacement. I picked up these parts today to install them soon. I’m not sure if this is what is causing all of my issues on this side but as they are in need of replacement I will swap the parts out and see if anything changes.
I complained to the dealership and they replaced the part at their expense. It is no longer shaking. Ride is still overly rough and the front end of the car seems like hopping over bumps on the road on the drivers side . It is as if the car is not sitting flat when its going down the road as there is a feeling of it leaning too much on the drivers side. Not sure where else to look. Tire pressure is where it needs to be and when I replaced the shocks a few weeks back I did not noticed anything which was broken or bent on the suspension. I have not had the steering rack looked at yet but I am going to make an appointment to have it tested in the next few weeks.
UPDATE: After inspecting the suspension I found that a few of the shocks were leaking. I replaced all of them with OEM parts but we had an issue with getting the bolt out of the control arm on the front passenger side. I took the vehicle into the dealership to have them deal with that as I don’t have the proper tools for getting the bolt out. They managed to get it out but they had to replace the bushing it goes though. Now the car shakes when accelerating at low speeds. I took it back to dealership today and they told me that the drive shaft on that side is bent and needs replacement., Funny how it never did this when I first took it to them. Does this sound right and should I trust this diagnosis? What drive shaft are they referring to? Would this be the axel?
With hydraulic systems, it’s rare that a pump with cause problems with steering like that, most often I find problems with the rack. Has the vehicle been in a collision or anything like that? If so, I would defiantly be looking at the rack.
Good luck and keep us posted.
The vehicle was in a minor accident and was hit on the front drivers side near the headlight. The side fender, bumper and hood was replaced. The car passed inspection afterwards and an alignment report showed that everything was okay. The alignment was performed about 9 months ago.
You say the car feels like it’s leaning too much when cornering. Do you get this impression in both directions, or just when turning in a particular direction?
The front suspension is the first thing I’d look at, and it’s quite possible that more than one thing has gone wrong. Sway bars and struts are what I’d look at first. Also, make sure your tires are inflated properly. Some vehicles can be very sensitive to tire pressures.
It is only noticable when turning right and the weight of the car is on the drivers side. Tire pressure has been checked and is okay.
I have not noticed any unusual wear. Last night I was driving around an area of town that has many hills. When going up a hill the front wheels spun a few times when going over small bumps. Perhaps the issue is with the suspension in the rear and my steering is being affected by this.
Two different mechanics were not able to find anything wrong with the front end.

The front coil springs have been replaced this week. The ride is a bit tighter however the leaning issue is still there and is noticeable when going over uneven road or turning corners. If the road is uneven, I have the steer the opposite way of the lean in the road. Also over bumps, the car tends to teeter from side to side and it is like there is no absorption of bumps from the shocks and the car does not want to try and level itself out.
I am really at at loss here. To date both front shocks and springs have been replaced as well as both tires. Not sure what else it could be that is causing this. Perhaps control arms/ball joint?

Almost a year later since I posted this topic. The car has been to 3 different places and none on them can figure out whats going on. To date I have had the tires replaced, all new KYB shocks and struts and an alignment done. It drives way better than it used to but it still feel like the car is leaning on the driver’s side. I am told that the springs are fine but I’m skeptical. The steering issue remains as well but maybe that’s related to the leaning issue I just mentioned.
