Well I went to work for a toyota dealer. I was promised that there was plenty of work to do. The sm that hired me told me I could avg 80-100 hrs a pay period in the man shop or I wanted the used car dept I could get 120-140 hrs. I took the used car dept because I am use to working on everything. Well my first day here I was busy and did like 15 hrs and then the next day nothing. The third day I did 10hrs. I am trying to give this place a chance but seems like we run out of work over here and I just sit around. This week I have 35hrs for 6 days. The next problem is the sm that hired me left 2 days after I started. I think I might be done working for a dealer and am going back to an indendent shop.

Thing I dislike the most is when you try to do things right and be fair to the customer, but you have a greedy shop owner behind the service desk ripping people off. And then they wonder why business slows down and the phone doesn’t ring.. I know we need to make money, but that’s not the way. I say be fair and honest and your business will grow slow and steady.. that’s how the race is won..

When I started in 2001 at midas I got paid 8 hr for the first month then went to 400 wk or 14% of parts and labor.. Now I make 32 hr flat rate

I used to drive old cars and would fix them have them painted and drive them.Then last year I really wanted to get a new truck so I went out and got one, it was great for the first 6 months but now it is like I am driving a bill around. Flat rate is really something that is good and bad.
I hear from all the old guys how it was back in the day when they got 50% of the door rate. I think that if it was still like that we wouldnt have many problems. I work at an indpendent and I make 32hr flat rate. Our door rate is 90.I am the only tech there. We have a service writer and a helper. It works for use. I guess the money isnt that bad either just is never the same.Thats where the problem is…Flat rate is really something that is good and bad.

I love it it saves lots of time, which means more money..I dont just go off the fixes that are posted I use it as a guide. You can get a direct pin out test without trying to use a trouble tree.
