Yeah its a UK car, sorry should have been more specific, yeah unfortunately the steering rack and its torque sensor are all one unit and one cannot be replaced without the other, the motor however can be so will try replacing that first, however, I do feel as Fopeano is saying that it could be the sensor thus the whole unit will need replaced. I have had tracking and alignment checked on the car and they were both fine. Thanks for the help people.
Yeah it’s full electric has EPS light on dashboard and I have checked the manual which states that it is, also no power steering reservoir.
I have checked the battery power when engine is off, reading was 12.6. I turned the engine on and seen 14.67V with the engine running. I turned everything in the car on electrically and increased the revs to 2000rpm and the reading on the battery was 14.43V. I checked for resitance in the circuits between the alternator and starter and earth straps and all readings were 0V. I was wondering if a starter motor stays engaged would it still be using power, thus taking power away from other components. I noticed that when I couldn’t start the car described in my original post the negatime terminal of the battery was hot, I thought this was a sign of resistance in the circuit. However the car had been sitting for more than 4 hours off. I’m considering taking it to an auto-electrician but I want to eliminate what I can to save on labour charges or potentially replacing the wrong part.

I used one of Eric the Car Guys videos where it was on checking the electrical system, I did the test on the negative side of the circuit with the negative battery terminal and the alternator. It was giving me a reading of 0.14-0.17 of resistance in the circuit. Simply changed all negative(ground) leads on the car and performed the test again, reading was now 0.00 with all electrical components on (except the rear window demister) and an increase of revs to 2000. This problem has now since gone away, but it is the original distributor in the car.

Yes, sometimes it happens if say I turn the engine on to reverse the car then tun I straight off, when I goto use the car say an hour or two later it wont fire up, twice it has fired up then cut out and then it takes around 20 seconds of trying to start the engine, which of course is bad as I dont want to flood it.
