I have done it at times. I use to check synchros, or to freak out passengers. I was always told it damages the synchros anyway, and possibly gear teeth, but I really doubt it. Trans guys will tell you to never do it. I generally don’t, because if not done right it WILL chip gears and beat up synchros.
I have a Dewalt electric DA Sander. HIGHLY recommend this as one doesn’t need monster compressor either ! Don’t bother with a cheapie, just get a Dewalt or another good brand and will wonder you didn’t on sooner. Don’t get a buffer and put a sanding pad on it – buffer is a different tool. Just get electric DA sander.

Depends on your focus. Are you going to take the car apart, or repair switches and things ? That is the real question. I love electronic tools but they are generally used less for the majority of tune up repair things that arise. An electronic device to check circuits can be made from old junk laying around, where there is simply no substitute for impact tools.

Knew somebody that took a corvette to walmart for a tranflush on a 4L60E. Total mistake. Transmission guru had to fix the whole mess, at Wal Marts expense. Flushing machines that leave the pan on and pull all that crap stuck on the bottom of the pan back through the valve body and other parts of the transmissions is just about like taking a loaded 45 and aiming it right at the transmission and firing it. Oh yes, I know that these chains claim differently, but how many of those guys or places actually rebuild transmissions ? Funny, I don’t know any trans rebuilders or mechanics including myself that own a flushing machine for transmissions. I don’t involve myself with non servicable filters and that sillyness, but a transmission with a pan DOESN’T have a drain plug because when changing the fluid, the pan must be dropped, filter replaced, pan cleaned of that slime at the bottom and clean fluid of the right type be replaced. NO machines.. no flushers…

Hard to diagnose from typing, but here is what I say. Try to sit and think about what your input from the throttle and or shift lever is doing INSIDE the transmission. Turn off the radio, go to a graveyard with no traffic, listen CAREFULLY, run through manual gear changes, ect. This will give you a better idea of what is happening. Example If you are shifting from Park to a gear, its pressuring something.. say for example direct clutches… your converter is always spinning, would be that be the problem, say if its on lockup or unlock.. going up a hill does it kick down causing a certain lower gear to engage and is this consistant with a certain sound or ratlle ? Always does it when its cold ? Could this be a pressure problem since hydraulic fluid does not work as effectively when cold ? Try to use your mental X ray vision and get inside of the trans and learn whats its doing as a response to what you are asking it to do. If you if you have no idea what the actual function is, if you can make these your own associations it will be easier for somebody else to diagnose. What gear, what speed, what temp, what RPM, all of it, write it down, think it out.. Think of this. Rather than saying to a tech, it clunks, We as techs like something better like this.. clunks when full throttle kicking down from third to second when engine temp is cold. Make variables constants in explainations. Watch for consistanty and make notes if you have to. My two cents worth. Make it as easy as possible to duplicate problems. Make a film of the problem, pass it on, document it.

So true, although modern 80s technology replacing a 1950s type transmission is mighty tempting. Its got a 1.78 first gear – go down through neighboorhood in first gear..hilarious , like a powerglide..although with electric kickdown, boo ! Pulling a car down to low gear at 70mph does have its thrill factor thoug although shifts points are way low, and I would rather recalibrate a governer in a 200r4.

The claim it can take more torque than a pawl ratchet. The bearings inside are pretty good sized. Using it however is not fun — no feedback, weird…would I get it near a Cat engine or Kenworth lugnut ? Not a chance, I want to keep using my hands.
