Naaa – pretty sure he has a light sensitivity issue. I recall a video in particular where he had damaged his glasses and was having a heck of a time. Part of getting older, possibly having had cataracts removed or laser eye surgery.
I used to subscribe to the Scotty Kilmer channel, but honestly I grew very tired of the simple advice “Buy a Toyota, you won’t have that problem!”. UGH!
I agree with his rants that cars have become too complex and over-engineered (example – typical Mercedes or BMW rant video). However aren’t all cars these days? You have to change with the times and accept that, gee, engines do not have distributors with points anymore.
Scotty comes across as that retired person who has a wealth of knowledge, has time on his hands, and enjoys both ranting and bragging. None get the car fixed, and I’ll take the bus before I buy a Toyota because I have a flat tire.
Thank you for your quick answer. I have not done that yet, but will. I already have the correct lubricant from a previous brake job.
My mistake at the start was following a video where the entire caliper assembly w/bracket was removed vs. just pulling the pads by removing the bolts at the pins. Watched another video that showed just removing the pads (which I should have done first) and they did manage to pry the pads apart enough to remove them.. then deal with screwing the piston in once the pads were removed. Hopefully I will have the same luck as it’s the act of screwing the caliper piston in that I can’t do – yet I need to expand the pads to remove them.
I am doing this outside (never mind having a nice, roomy 2 car garage :S ) and the weather has turned against me for a couple days.
Thanks again and I’ll post an update.
Indeed I really need to sell it. It is a second vehicle for me, and I drive it once in a while just to get it out on the road and keep fluids circulating and tires rolling. 2 of the past 4 winters, I’ve pulled the battery and insurance – and left it parked vs. take it out on the Indiana winter roads.
I’ll have to check the show archives – I missed that one.
Thanks for the heads-up.
OH – I know this is likely completely out in left field, but the trip computer in the overhead console insists the outside temp is -40F regardless of temp.
Good call! I replace the FCM once for another problem (headlights), and it came from a salvage yard from a vehicle with the same options.
When I had the van to the dealer for the theft system failure, they told me they could not get the computers to communicate. They literally wanted over $2000 to just get the van to start again. It ended up being towed back home non-running… and that was the “better” of the 2 Dodge dealers in town.
I can say that the output from the brake switch is shorted to ground – but I also see that it feeds back to the FCM. I’ll pull it today and post my results.
Thanks!
Thanks everybody for your much appreciated input. I’ve got to say this van has had so many electrical problems that it’s crazy. I had to replace the turn signal assembly (simply wear – would not cancel after a left turn) and saw that dreaded name “Lucas”… and filled in :Lord of Darkness” after that!
I will start with pulling the carpet along the door sills to track, and start an electrical trace signal from the back. Maybe this is a good time to flip over the electrical panel under the hood as well and check for any issues there as well.
Oh – the radio is factory AM/FM/CD/Cassette with 4 speakers installed. Left rear is out, left front is weak – which indicates to me a possible short in that channel. I repair electronics for a living, but audio – not cars.
As I stated earlier, nothing but electrical gremlins in this van. Air bag light comes on from time to time – replacing the clock spring did not help. Yesterday the ABS light came on for no reason. Wipers started acting up recently – problem was relays on the electrical panel. I had to replace the ECU as it locked me out thinking the van was stolen. Given that it is a second vehicle for me, and I only put maybe 1000 miles a year on it – it’s time to part ways.
I’ll keep you folks posted as to what I find – hopefully my finds will help others.
Thank you for your very quick reply. The conversion was done in 2004, and 1200 miles away… so that’s not an option in this instance (but indeed was a good idea).
I do have a signal tracer and a heavy electronics background – I was just hoping to locate some basic layout map as to what side of the vehicle, what may also be with it (example, the power side doors, wing windows, speaker, etc). In fact oddly the left rear speaker has stopped working and definitely from not cranking up the stereo.
I may just have to trace this one backwards and see where the wires take me. I want to sell the van – and it will sell as-is – but this definitely needs to be fixed.
Thanks!
