going off of this picture, I would pick option C, but I may be wrong.

I would pick something like a Ford Focus, possibly an SVT model. Could be a good middle ground of import-zippy and domestic, and not quick/fast enough to get hurt. Very basic to work on and enough interchanges with the common model to not be a nightmare to fix.

If your steering is sloppy it is another front end part. Try the idler arm, pitman arm, center link, and tie rod ends for play. Earlier style steering boxes are also prone to leaking and gears wearing.

I ran no sway bar for years and had no ill effects even on a lifted truck. Steering slop is elsewhere.

What is your son into? Import scene? Off Road? Muscle car? Driving something he won’t get pulled over in? :silly:

The ignition cylinders go out quite often in these trucks.

There is no difference in a 2wd or 4×4 22re ECM.

The one on my shelf turned out to be an early model, sorry.

There is a easy way to turn the truck over, just above the starter, there is a black solenoid signal wire, bypass it and send 12v to the solenoid with the key on, if it turns over and cranks, follow procedure to trace what is not allowing the solenoid to see 12v. The only way I can see a not start because of trans is the neutral safety switch, the circuit does not go through the TCM.

The TCM is a separate computer located on front of the shifter. It piggybacks with the ECM an runs off of a handful of parameters like throttle position and engine temp. Yours being a 90 model it will have a cable speedo instead of electric.

What problems was he having before playing musical ECM? I may have one sitting on a shelf you are welcome to.

My mom has an 07 z touring 6 speed she is wanting me to buy.

The interior is made of scratch of lottery ticket and the stock struts died at 19k miles. Not really my cup of tea on what a car should be 🙁
