Quoted From dreamer2355:
Im still skeptical on the wheel bearing being at fault. What testing did he show you to prove that the wheel bearing is bad?
I with everyone else on the strut mounts.
However, if you let this mechanic do all that work, as him what he will do if the issue is still present once the ‘repairs’ have been completed.
All he did was have one technician shake the the tire back and forth like u would do when checking tie rods and up down. and he would stand under the vehicle with a flash light visually inspecting the components. i guess he supposedly saw excessive movement in the assembly?
I will defiantly be sure to replace my strut mounts when i do the struts.
I was going to do all the work myself. i priced everything out. for just parts and alignment i would spend less than $500. That’s with 2 new wheel hub assemblies, 2 struts, 2 inner tie rods, 2 outer tie rod ends, and strut mounts. so what i have decided is that ill replace my struts, mounts, and tie rods and then go get an alignment. and if after all that the noise is still there then ill replace the bearings. will i need another alignment after the replacing wheel hub assembly? even if my bearings are at fault i would be willing to bet at least 60 – 70% of the movement and noise is coming from my struts and tie rods.
i agree with O’Reilly being the cheapest. i haven’t had to much experience with O’Reilly. but just the other day i went around to auto zone O’Reilly’s, and advanced auto parts to price inner tie rods. AZ priced me $28 I dont remember what kind of warranty though, O;rReilly priced me $17 with a LLT warranty and advanced priced me $17 with a 1 year warranty. i know AZ price matches so i might have AZ price match or just buy at O’Reilly
right now gas varies alot in my city. the lowest i found was $3.17 a gallon which was yesterday. $20 and it got me up to just shy of a 3/4 tank from empty. the most expensive was around $3.45 a gallon. if anyone here owns a smart phone then i strongly suggest downloading the app Gas Buddy. thats how ive always found cheap gas in my city. and that was just regular unleaded i never buy mid or premium.
i took my car back to the mechanic and had him take a better look at it. so he put the car up on the lift. He said the inner tie rod on the passenger side is loose. and the bearing on the driver side needed to be replaced as. I explained to him that there was no howling when driving but he still insists on it being the bearing. He said the bearing is worn causing play in the assembly which was making the sound when steering. He also said that my driver side strut was ‘blown’ im not entirely sure what he meant by that though. because the strut just seemed worn with a little leaking fluid. he didnt mention anything about my control arm bushings. so right now im looking at two struts 1 inner tie rod on the passenger side. and 1 wheel hub assembly and an alignment. that just the bare minimum. the boot on my driver side outer tie rod end popped and as a result all of the grease has oozed out. I’m still debating as to whether or not i should just replace both the inner and outer tie rod for both sides or if i should just replace the boot on the tie rod end and the loose inner tie rod. what do u guys think? and when i do the struts im planning on replacing the actually strut as well as the mounts but was going to reuse the springs. would it be worth replacing the spring and is there a way to check the springs condition?. Thanks for all the help you guys have given me so far its greatly appreciated.
I dont have a garage so i had to turn the trunk of my car into my so called garage. most of my tools(sockets, wrenches, ratchets, etc) have a carrying case that just sits in my trunk. and for my other tools(screwdrivers, pliers, mini prybars, misc wrenches, etc) i have in an old first aid kit container. that i ripped the stickers off of. this works for me only because i don’t have a whole lot of tools. but i hope to eventually get a garage. so right now im just a moving toolbox lol. which has actually been very helpful. its great for those emergency road side repairs. also ive been at friends houses and they were having trouble with there cars and ill had to do was go to my trunk and get all the tools i needed to make the repair.
Have you noticed any fresh coolant on the ground or running down the side of your block? or coolant in your oil? my first steps before pressure checking the system would just be to look for leaks. if you haven’t seen any under your car then try throwing a piece of clean cardboard or something similar under your when you park it that way it will easier to spot especially if you park it overnight and it dries up. if theres no leaks and your going through coolant than it might be draining in to your block somewhere. if you still have no luck in finding the leak then id say your next step would be to pressure check. but the coolant has to be going somewhere.
now when you say the website do u literally mean the whole website? home, about, videos, tools, parts and forum? or are u talking just about the forum and videos
ya i would like to see an actual app. not a just a mobile site. though a mobile site would be better than nothing. the app should be focused on the forum for posting replies and reading them as well as the search box for looking up codes and questions. the real value in the app i think would be the fact that if your outside working on your car and you need look up something such as a trouble shooting procedure that someone had posted then you could just pull out your phone and look it up right then and there compared to having to get access to a computer and either right it down, memorize it, or print it off. im always getting on Google and auto zone with my phone as I’m working on my car to look up wiring diagrams and repair procedures.
YA ive seen atleast one other post about this. hopeful we can get it soon. but every one has to remember that both Eric and the web master are very busy. so we just have to be patient
a mobile app would be great!
a mobile app would be great!
you need to take the time to go through the tools. not just rummage through the boxes real quick. i personally would try to keep as much as i could.
does the homebrew for seafoam work as good as the regular
