There is such a massive amount of reasons for a vehicle to have poor fuel economy. The vehicle is starting to get older and a good tune up will definitely help performance and economy. I have learned that tire pressure makes a massive difference in economy. I would just go around and just check all of your regular maintenance items like ToyotaKarl said. That should help some.

        Definitely sounds like you jumped the gears that pop was a massive backfire for the valves being out of time with the ignition, the damage really depends from car to car, the only thing you can do is to dig in and take a look, if you are really curious about maybe a lifter issue go ahead and yank off the valve cover, that isn’t a big job, but I can almost bet the chain was loose and rattling causing the noise. Then it jumped causing the valves to be out of time and then lack of power and eventually the loss of power. like chevyman said, best case scenario is you take off the chain cover, hook it up, and then it will be done.

          No ball joints in the rear typically, like I said I have to know the make and model. On your typical American RWD vehicle its a solid axle in back using either leaf springs on most trucks and either coils with shocks or struts on a sedan on most cars. Every wheel has a bearing in a car but typically rear bearings don’t go bad that often if it’s a straight axle, fronts are alot more prone to this however because most are just packed with grease and if not repacked every now and then, they’ll start to not get the proper lube they need and go out. And also, yes only the fronts need to get aligned

            PSI (pounds of pressure per square inch) is how much pressure the tank can hold, if you have a high psi tank but a low CFM (Cubic feet a minute, or volume)it will take a long time to get filled but once filled it will have a lot of pressure. however a high CFM compressor with a low PSI tank will tank very little time to fill up however the low PSI will make it less compatible with everything else (impacts usually require at least 100 PSI to perform correctly) try to find a decent balance between the two and it should work fine. I can’t look at the ebay things sadly due to the restricted internet here. I can look at them when I’m home
sometimes the inner lining collapses internally..
I didn’t think of that, that is also a good thought, rare though usually the line blows before that happens

                it depends on the make and model of the car if they are interchangeable but the “front lower ball joints” on rockauto sounds like it might include both of them. if that’s the case just go ahead and do both if y’all have the time. wheel bearings however are fairly interchangeable. I’ve never seen one that wasn’t but I’m sure there is a vehicle somewhere.

                  the first thing you have to do is top them off, now half the time if you pump the clutch a few times the system will bleed itself, however if it still isn’t engaging right, get a friend and bleed it, if your brake reservoir was empty as well they are either tied into each other or you have two separate issues you need to look for. either way you definitely need to bleed the brakes, they probably have a lot of air in them so bleed them pretty good, after all this is done clean everything really well with the cleaner of your choice and look for leaks.

                    A great way to test your solenoid is to turn the key on to the “on” position and have it not running, get a screwdriver and jump the terminals (Please be careful not to Shock yourself) if it works fine every time it is the solenoid if it still hangs up every now and then its something else, maybe the ignition switch

                      yeah Fords are terrible about belt squeak, I know from a lot of personal experience, I’ve learned that Fords are very particular in what belt you get. I recently had a belt squeak on my 94 F-150. I bought the lower grade belt and it worked for a solid week and it started to squeak again. couldn’t figure it out but later I bought the high grade belt and it was noticeably thicker and put it on and it was gone! still have the old belt though in the toolbox in case of an emergency. you never know B)

                        Maybe the seal to the exhaust side of the turbo is leaking and causing the oil to build up in the pipe and smoke when it starts getting hot? if not maybe it’s actually something with the engine.
1. Drum brakes are self energizing. If I set my car’s parking brake I can back out of the driveway and not notice it is on. It is only when I try to drive forward that I find the vehicle doesn’t want to move.

                          2. Having driven a vehicle with zero service brake material left I know for ultimate bite metal to metal works best. It works like this – touch the brake pedal and find yourself hanging from the belts.

                          3. It is likely the parking brake drum touches the shoes at some place and that will engage a brake with bare shoes.
I believe that these expeditions have base model disk brakes in the back. I don’t recall ever seeing one of these vehicles with drums.I thinking it might even be a drivetrain issue, what kind of engine is in this thing, is it the 4.6L or the 5.4L? also what is the mileage and are there any check engine codes on?

                            what exactly do you mean by loose? can you take a video of it maybe?

                              hmm, maybe it has something to do with the parking brake mechanism, follow the cables and see if anything is binding up, if it seems to be okay, try temporarily unhooking it, and driving around, you won’t had a parking brake when you do this so just be careful, I’m thinking maybe the automatic adjuster in the mechanism that adjusts as the pads wear down maybe over adjusted and is making the rear brakes rub and hold the car back. just a guess and one of the cheapest things to do to help diagnose it.

                              let me know what happens

                                my guess is it has something to do with the oiling system for the turbocharger, maybe the scavenge pump (if it has one) is bad and if is doesn’t, maybe add one. I’m not very familiar with turbo chargers though so don’t quote me on that, good luck

                                  I get up to go to work in the morning, the power goes out, so no hot breakfast on that December morning, next I go to start my 1997 Ford Expedition, tire is flat so I air it up using the air left in the air compressor, now go to start it, battery is dead tried to jump start with my truck and the jumper cables are shot, so I decide to take my truck which was illegal at the time, go to stop at a stop sign in my neighborhood and rear brakes go out, I limp it back home, yank out the battery put it in the expedition and get to work 30 minutes late. Boss yells at me and at this point I don’t really care because I’m just happy to be at work. work goes by without a hitch, now I get ready to go home and I go to start the Expedition and I get the click of death, battery was dead again, only I had stayed late to make up for being late in the morning so nobody was there so I had to unlock the shop again grab a battery charger and charge the battery. needless to say I had a rough day that day
