I have a 91 civic sedan and my front wipers have way too much play. When they hit either the top or bottom of the rotation they either slap the hood, or the windshield frame and fly off the windshield. Luckily not far enough to cause them to jam.

I think I diagnosed it as the caps at the end of the linkages have given out, but I am having problems taking the cowl off. I removed all of the visible screws and plastic pop tabs. But the cowl seems to be hanging someplace near the wiper motor.

Does anyone know if this is the problem and how to get this cowl off?

I am assuming its the beam (11 and 10 since they both have some slop in it, not the dust seal. But what would I need to do to remove and replace it? Also what should I buy?

Also the arms are installed correctly and tight against the pivot cap.

It’s an idea, the biggest issue right now is that I can’t get that cowl off for some reason

Remove the arms and the cowl should pop off as they’re usually held down by plugs. I’m having the same issue with my car and the link on my car has snapped.

It’s very common for the plastic cups on the wiper transmission to break and cause that problem. As for the cowl you need to remove the round clips first before you pry up on it. It’s a tricky operation but if you’re careful it should come up.

The round clips meaning the clips that hold the rubber gasket in place? I think I removed all of them. I will have to double check.

How hard is it to take the linkage in the transmission off?

You just pry up on the clips on the rubber gasket. You need to remove the rubber strip before you remove the cowl. I’m talking about the clips on the cowl lower down under the wipers. You need to remove these before you pry up on the cowl assembly.

That’s the hardest part really. After that just remove the wiper assembly and replace the clips. By that I mean replace the arms they come in. I really haven’t found a way to replace just the clips that’s been successful. Those just pop off the assembly and the new ones pop into place.

So, I removed the clips that hold the gasket. Then I removed the screws under those covers. Then there are clips aswell? I will have to take a look.

Good to hear that it isn’t that challenging. That was one of my bigger fears.

                      Thank you!

I ended up trying today, with it being cold, I didn’t get far. But I was able to lift the cowl off up to a certain point. Right over the wiper motor I still can’t get the cowl off. Infact the weather stripping seems to be almost glued into place.

Is this a possible idea? and any idea on how to remove it from the car?

I saw a thread that had weather stripping on the cowl.

That piece should not be glued down. If it is then it’s likely someone did that to possibly cure a leak or something. The cowl piece should only be held down by those plastic clips.

then something happened that I don’t know about haha. I will have to when it gets warmer try a hair dryer method to warm that area.

Here is an update. I was able to get that stuck portion free. Looks like there was some gasket there of some sort. I will have to find a new one and replace it. I used a hair dryer to warm up the gasket.

Thanks to all that helped. Now to diagnose the wipers and get the correct parts. Should I just replace all the linkages? Or just the one that has the most slop?

                                I would do them all.

So I was going to order from this site. I was going to get 10, 11, 7 and 8. Right?

All you should need is 10 and 11.
