Here it goes, the ultimate question. Should us mechanics/DIY’ers attempt a windshield replacement to save a few $? Or is it better in the long run to pay places like Safelite to do it? If it can be done by anyone any tips tricks?

I think it’s better to “bite the bullet” and have a professional replace your windshield and here’s why. If you do it yourself you need the correct adhesive for your windshield.

Some air bags rely on the correct sealant to work correctly. On some cars the windshield is actually considered as part as the vehicle structure.

If it leaks it would be hard to remove it to reseal it again without damaging it.

I had an old chev impala that the body would flex and popped out the glass every six months. It was most irritating to be rattling around and I glued it down a few times. I agree that the glass specialist can come out and do the job right and what they charge is reasonable.

You’ll need to cut the old stuff out – the tools for that can be expensive. You’ll need the primer and the two part sealant which isn’t cheap.

You can get them replaced for FREE with most insurance companies.

My State Farm coverage is for all glass. Free. Even tail/headlights.

I had a Feeling that Having it done professionally was going to be the better bet. As far as goint through the insurance company is concerned, I tried that the day it happened and I would have to pay the deductable if I did it that way. Its going to be cheaper just to pay for the service out of my own pocket. Thanks for the advice everyone! On the bright side thats one less thing I have to do to the car myself.

Shop around for price. Not all glass places charge the same rate. When I needed a windshield in my Caprice a number of years ago, the first quote I got was near to $300, after making the rounds on the phone, the place I settled on did it for $165, near half the price of my first quote, and he did such a nice job, I’ve gone back to him two other times when I needed glass done.
