I have a 91 civic dx sedan. No mods just stock, it has 301k on it. The first clutch was done at 230k. Now 71k miles later I am getting clutch slippage. Now I only get it when I apply power at low rpms and usually in 3rd and 4th gear.
Now I kind of see that when I push the pedal down very slightly the clutch disengages. I saw in this video that it could possibly help that, but will it help the slippage?
Also, is it me or is that terrible mileage from a clutch? Also this was an aftermarket clutch.

If the pedal is “high” then adjust the clutch and that may fix your problem. I think it is a manual adjustment at the top of the gearbox on your car. Ware on clutches depends on the driver and the sort of use of the vehicle. I would think it should last longer than 71k. In normal driving never slip the clutch in any gears other than 1st or reverse. In flat out driving you need to slip the clutch severely between gear changes. This kills clutches quickly. Some drivers waste their clutch buy slipping it on every gear change in normal driving.

Same here, the 71k was majority highway driving. I don’t slip the clutch severely between gear changes. The only problem I might have had was one the car switched drivers, also the clutch chattered a bit before and I think we kind of burnt the clutch up a bit.
September 28, 2012 at 7:16 pm #465663I THINK that has the same cable operated clutch as shown in the video, adjust the free play of the clutch and then see if you still have slippage. If you do you’ll need to replace the clutch. No worries, it’s really not a bad job on that car.
October 3, 2012 at 9:47 pm #466540Now I am a bit confused on adjusting the clutch. Should I release that adjusting nut before doing anything?
Also how long do you think a clutch replacement should take?
EDIT: Well I have no freeplay and I can not adjust the clutch cable nut. It is locked. I also can not pull the cable up as shown in that video.

October 4, 2012 at 1:14 am #466614Then it defiantly needs to be adjusted. Try using a pair of channel locks or something to turn the nut counterclockwise.

October 4, 2012 at 3:41 am #466675Okay, so what your saying is just back the nut off until play is reached? What I am nervous about is breaking the nut and that the cable could be rusted to the mount.
Also I think it has been like this for years.

October 4, 2012 at 9:27 pm #466758spray some penetrating oil on the nut first.

October 4, 2012 at 11:02 pm #466785I will do that, I put wd 40 when I was just monkeying around with it.
So I should definitely loosen the cable. That will probably move my engagement lower?

October 5, 2012 at 9:34 pm #466938It’s plastic, it’s not going to rust. Once you get it loose follow the steps in the video as you have the EXACT same set up.
