1997 acura CL 3.0 I have no history on the car.
So my temp gauge goes up about 1/3 of the way. The car heater works but not amazing. No cooling system problems.
There are two different thermostats available. a 170 and a 180. I am gonna assume for now that it has a 170 in there.
I know other engines (like the 3800 series II) have more than one available as well. Having the “bigger” one in there during hot weather caused slight running problems like the car would shutter on a quick take-off (as I experienced with my 99 lesabre)

So for the 3.0 honda engine, is there a reason for two different ones? Was that to “rig” some problem being caused by the 180? 10 degrees doesn’t sound like much but I imagine it would make a noticeable difference in how the heater works.

So, what is the best route here? If I go with a 180 so the heater will work better, is that going to cause the engine to act stupid? Not really wanting to “just try it” until I have a bit more knowledge as to WHY they had two different ones available.
      Thank you

Ten degrees should not make much difference in engine performance, it would get to 180 degrees and higher anyway under normal operation, the 180 degree thermostat just gets it there faster and keeps it there under very cold conditions.

Go for higher spec one. Also improves mpg slightly.

There’s only one Acura part number as far as I know. There may be 2 listed for aftermarket thermostats. Honestly, I’m not a fan of aftermarket thermostats, especially for Hondas. They work, just not as well in my opinion.

If you had no choice, and needed to choose between the 2 you listed, I would go for the 180º.

As for your heater, you might find useful information here.
