I have a 99 Tahoe 5.7 vortex with a crank no start condition. I took the starter off. Took it to autozone to have it checked. As suspected it was bad. Purchased a new one and out it on. Still have the crank no start condition. Did a fuel pressure check and it was 60psi. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I’m afraid the parts guy probably hosed you. If the engine was cranking, you weren’t having much in the way of starter problems.

The next thing to check for is spark at the plugs.

          Check for spark.

Why did you pull the starter if it was cranking?

Do you have a fully charged battery? if so like notoriousDUG suggests check for spark

If you don’t appear to be getting any sort of ignition, you could always check the fuses. A blown fuse could disable the ignition system, all it takes is that one little voltage spike to blow a fuse.

The parts guy was my dad and I was able to see the starter was bad. We have check for spark at the plugs. It was good. The f fuses are all good. This is why I am stumped. We took the starter of because there were times it wouldn’t even try to crank. Could the crank sensor be bad? I have no clue where to go next. Once again thank you

                  so let’s sum up.
                  Starter turns, or cranks. Good.
Fuel pressure at the rail is 60PSI. Good.
Spark is present. OK, my question is – how GOOD is the spark? Is it hefty healthy spark or is it weak, barely seen one? As that will point towards weak power supply towards the plugs.
You have igntion coils per plug. I had Vortech engine same year. Chances of ALL of them go bad are null. V8 will actually start even off 2 cylinders…
What do we have left? Fuel – check; spark – check. What’s left is somethimg more important. Timing. And that may be out of kilter either because of stretched timing chain or, worse, bad ECM.
I’d recommend checking on timing next.
Also, just for the heck of it, try starting off another vehicle with engine revved, so that you boost power supply.
Also, make sure plugs are not fouled with unburnt fuel.

Well check that today. Thank you for an idea. I will get on here to let you know what we find. Thank you so much.

Also one more question before I check anything else. When I try to start the engine, it sometimes will sound like it is still trying to crank even after the key is in the off position.could that indicate timing being off?

It is still tries to crank after you let off the key you could have a bad ignition switch.

Fuses that look good aren’t always good. I’ve had perfectly good looking fuses and replaced them in desperation and it fixed the issue. They don;t always show it when they fail.

Is there a way to check the ignition switch or do I just change it

Is there a way to check for a bad ignition switch or does it just have to be changed out.

I found this. It was inscrutable to me except I searched Ignition switch in the page and it says that if you have power coming from the fuse box to the switch the switch is very likely the problem. http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?topic=64603.0;wap2
I also found this just answer instruction page for changing it. http://www.justanswer.com/chevy/3ytsv-replace-1998-1999-chevrolet-tahoe-ignition-cylinder.html
There really isn’t much saying how to test one. I suggest you cold call several mechanics and see if any of them will tell you how to isolate it as the problem.
