so the other day i made a post bout my lights dimming and that just turned out to be a bad battery. but i also had a whinning from the engine bay and a burning rubber smell. after i put a new battery in i took the car down to my local shop and he said i had a bad idler pulley. so yesterday i had a new one put in.

but the sound and smell are still there, and now when the engine is cold and i start driving down the road it feels like something catches, and the car jolts back. almost as if the engine speed dramatically drops.

i was a little suspicious before that the power steering was going bad, because when i looked it had a very slight wobble to it when running. if it was seizing up when cold could it give that jolting effect? or should i be worrying about the tensioner on the timing chain?

the alternator and AC compressor were both inspected when i took it to the shop, but i think because the power steering on my car has its own independent belt from the alternator, and AC that he may have not checked that.

any information would be very helpful!

Its a possibility with the power steering. The belt may be slipping.
If the power steering was locking up your steering would be hard
to turn. Does the steering become like manual or steering is normal?

+1 on the power steering theory. Don’t overcomplicate it. Look for the simplest solution first. In addition to the link College man provided. You might also find this useful.

Good luck and keep us posted.

The power steering has always seemed a little harder than usual but Its Not any worse tha, it has been. And when I think it seizes its very quick and releases so it’s hard to tell if the power steering is effected. I’m at work but ill check the links when I get a chance. Thanks for the responses!

So you got the car diagnosed for a sound? And the replaced the idler pulley, yet the sound remains? Might want to take it back and ask him about that.
I usually work on my car, but when I can’t, I expect it to be a problem given, issue stated, problem resolved basis with a mechanic.
Dunno if the actual technicians here would disagree with that philosophy.
