I have a ACE hardware proffessional series tool set that has wrenches, 1/4,3/8, and 1/2 inch ratchets and sockets that I got on a black Friday sale for $40 about 4 years ago that is regularly $200. I have loved the set to death its still complete with some pieces replaced due to breaking. however I generally keep that kit in My truck and I would like to have another set to keep in my tool box that stays home. I dont work on vehicles for a living but I sure enjoy it and do it as much as I can. My wife always questions why I need more tools and I told her there is never enough tools and the right tools make jobs alot easier and faster. she isnt mean about it more teasing.

I cant afford a set of snap on tools or anything like that but I have been eye balling a set of craftsman tools that are supposed to be good for any kind of fastener even if its rounded off. I would like the set to have a 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drives like the one that I have or atleast1/4 and 3/8. does anyone have any kind of experince with these tools? or any other reccomendations? I would be looking at about $200 and it might not be for a little bit but Im mostly speculating right now. thanks 🙂

Well there is this set by Gearwrench

Gearwrench 219 Piece Mechanics Complete 80940

You will need to look over what all it includes but, it seems pretty comprehensive.

Btw, it has their surface drive tech on the wrenches which helps (slightly) to prevent rounding. Nothing compared flank drive though.

Stay away from Craftsman unless it is USA made you will round more things then you will fix. BTW those universal sockets and wrenches will round anything that is not grade 8 or 10.9 in hardness. AKA almost all home depot type bolts it will take the corners off if you are making it really tight. Even then I have rounded grade 8 and 10.9 with spline drives which is what those universal things are from craftsman.

They can be useful if you have specialty type fastener heads but, they also tend to round them if they are really tight. I happen to know the exact set you are talking about it is this Craftsman 153PC Universal MTS Set I have thought about it myself but, odds are I would break more things then I would fix and I would want them for specialty fasteners. Being a mechanic and dealing with German parts they like to use all kinds of weird stuff.

Btw, they only work on lightly rounded fasteners like if you used an adjustable wrench. Anything majorly rounded like you used a 6pt socket and it rounded it you can forget about using it it will spin and laugh at you.
