Where’s the Oil?

I have a 94 Mustang GT 5.0. I know the engine is going bad but that’s not today’s issue. I had used some Restore as part of my last oil change. I have been checking oil levels every 100 miles or so and level is staying up. Today, I decided to change the oil to put in high mileage oil (car has 131K). Drained oil and replaced filter but only got about 2 quarts out of car. So I checked the dip stick and BEFORE adding any oil back, it showed to be only a quart low. I always figured the dip stick is in the oil pan near the oil plug. The oil was hot when I drained it and it came out as fast as any hot oil would come out. All I could come up with is “this is not good!” I added some oil back but seem to have slightly over-filled it based on dip stick. When I ran the car, I had a little more blue smoke than what I had prior to changing the oil (from over-filling?). I’ve actually changed the oil a couple of times since I got the car and never had this issue (that I know of). In past, I seem to get about 5 quarts out but today only about 2. Is something gummed up? Could the car have the wrong dip stick (too long?). What’s going on?

I was just reading online. There are 2 oil pan plugs? Geez. Well, let’s go jack the car up and see.

I guess in past, since oil catch pan was not empty I did not notice. But that also means I have been over-filling the engine with oil each time. I am really PO’ed at myself right now.

Yeah, that’s correct. It has a plug at the front and a plug at the bottom. The front drains about 2/3 of a quart.

Yep. So, I drained all the oil (which was too much anyway) from BOTH drain plugs and went ahead and changed the filter (again)(filters are cheap anyway) and put in new oil (the correct amount). Also, in the front of my garage where I have a list of what oil filters go on what car, I wrote in big letters by the 94, 2 DRAIN PLUGS! Cranked it up and drove it about 4 miles and everything seems ok. Eric can probably do a ETCG video some time on when you find that you just made a really dumb mistake. Here’s the funny part: when I got back from the drive a couple walking in the neighborhood asked me how I liked that Mustang. I told him about the 2 drain plugs and the guy said oh yes, they have that hump in the middle. I actually think I drained the oil from the back plug last time and never drained the front. This time I had drained the front and did not drain the back. I’ve always put on this website that I am not a pro, but apparently I am not a great amateur either 🙂

It is an honest mistake. Now here is a question – why in the hell would they design the oil pan that way? Two drain plugs is just goofy.

So off topic but – has ever a honda civic with a fart cannon tried to race you? The primered body kits they put on their cars make it almost as powerful as a 5-0

I agree with goofy (bad design) especially if it only hold 2/3 of a quart.

Everyone wanted to race me when I had a 97 Vette. Not so much with the 94 Mustang. 🙂

It’s a common mistake don’t worry about it. In fact I’m glad you found that as I was going to ask if you had that type of drain pan. Ford has been using that for some time now.

Who knows, perhaps the engine I get for the Fairmont will be that type. If it is, I’ll be sure to mention it then.

Thanks for the updates and for using the ETCG forum.

Thanks. Does make you feel dumb at the time though 🙂 Also, the car seems to like having the right amount of oil now – I’m driving it today and it’s running pretty good. Makes me ready to put off replacing the engine. Even the check engine light stays off most of the time these days. Little things that make me happy 🙂
