I am going to be making some frames out of steel. one for a mini 4 wheeler and one for a moped and I will use it for random projects afterwards. I dont want to pay much money and have no welding experience. i have brazed and soldered but not welded. I dont know if it would be worth it to rent a welder or if you even can.

You are very welcome. glad to be able help. just don’t ask me about gas welding ( oxy/acetelyne ) never could get the hang of that. the whole two hands doing two different things at the same time deal. LOL

It kind of depends on the thickness of metal you are going to work with. I have two set ups- for heavy welding I use a 220 volt lincoln arc welder. this thing can weld most any guage although it is not good for sheet metal as even on the lowest setting it will burn through. I also have a flux core mig welder ( 120 volt ) I use this for sheet metal on up to about 1/4 ” thick metal. ( fyi- flux core mig is shielded wire so no gas bottle needed ) the mig welder is from harbor freight cost about 150.00 it has worked out well for me. there are quite a few videos on youtube re: welding and a mig welder is really easy to use. get yourself an autodarkening welding helmet ( makes life easier ). you may also want to pick up a book on the basics of welding then get some scrap metal and start laying down beads. good luck with your welding projects.

could you use the flux core for box tubing? i think its 5/16 box tubing but i will probably use thicker tubing for the moped frame and i might use round tubing because it will have to attatch to the front of a motorcycle not sure though

I think you would be fine with a flux core mig welder for this application. check out what harbor freight tools has to offer. you can read customer reviews as well.

You should be fine with a 110 v welder. they are usually 90 amp max so the ” duty cycle ” is a little shorter ( duty cycle is the time you can operate the unit before letting it cool down- basically ) get one with wire speed adjustment and twin power setting.

If you search out Craigslist, Ebay ect… you may find a real good deal on a used Lincoln,Hobart or Miller machine. For about the same amount of money these machines are backed by parts and service that you may not be able to find with some of the cheaper welders out there.

Harborfreight is going to be your cheapest bet.

I have to 2:nd this. Stay away from the cheap alternatives and buy a used quality machine. 10 years from now, you’ll thank me/us for that advice.

You can get a 90A flux welder from HF for about $90. I invested a little more and got this one on sale. It was like $170 with shipping.

If you live near a Northern Tools store, you wouldn’t have to pay shipping, obviously. I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, as I have about 1/2 a day a week of free time, but when I do, I’ll post a review.

And no, I don’t get paid to plug Northern. Just posting what I got 🙂
