When to replace struts

      Sorry if I am posting too much, but my cars hit that magical time of maintenance.

        Usually you check for leakage or sagging springs. Also you can try bouncing the rear bumper a few times and seeing if it bounces excessively. If not, personally I wouldnt worry about changing them

          Personally speaking, I always recommend replacing struts on both axles at the same time, to keep the ride quality even. I’ve had customers come back complaining of a weird ride after only replacing struts on one axle, so I always recommend that all of them get replaced at the same time.

            Tire cupping is also a sign of warn struts

              The struts are not there to support the weight in the trunk. They are there to minimize the bouncing of the tire and stabilize the suspension so that when you are driving down that bumpy road it doesn’t feel so bumpy and they make it a much smoother ride.

                yea, the tires aren’t cupping and it doesn’t bounce excessively. So I think they are good, I am just going to change out the fronts. Quick-struts are the best idea ever. The reason I brought up weight is most people that drive W bodies don’t carry a 12 inch miter saw and various tools for weeks in their trunks (I do volunteer stage set construction and lighting) or move a couple hundred feet of heavy theatrical cables. 🙂

                I am going to pick up the quickstruts today. Trying to decide though, go with Monroe, or try out the Moog’s or Raybestos ones.

                  Monroe had a rebate going on but I don’t know if it’s still going. If they have the Monroe at Advance Auto you could save by buying on line and picking up at store or get free shipping + rebate Lifetime warranty on Monroe don’t know about the others. I have Monroe.

                        I only replace them if they’re leaking generally OR if I see the tire wear that has been mentioned. If you’re talking about the Civic in your description however I would recommend OE parts, Honda’s don’t take well to aftermarket parts especially when it comes to suspension parts, they never seem to ride right on aftermarket struts in my experience unless you get the high end racing ones. If you’re talking about one of your domestics quickstruts are the way to go, I’ve had a lot of luck there.

                          Yea its my Buick, I am ordering 2 fronts, the rears are fine. I’ll toss a set of linkages on there too cause for 5 bucks each, when the struts is out of the way, they are much easier to do.

                          Speaking of my stable, the van might go away for a 5 year old Subaru Forester.
