It is very unlikely that you are even close to needing brake drum shoes. I justed checked mine at 120k miles on my 2008 Honda Civic and they are still ok. Same with my 2001 Sienna at 100k miles. But it wouldn’t hurt to pull the drum off to check them and adjust the self-adjuster mechanism. Pulling the drum off might be difficult though so if the drum were to fight back too much I would just leave it be until a later time if you are not having any issues.
Alright thanks guys I will check up on my shoes just in case. Eric did say replacing the actual drum due to the scrapping of the worn shoes are way more expensive than the shoes themselves.
Yea, a visual inspection will tell you what kind of shape they’re in. As stated drum brakes last just about forever, I’ve seen them well over 100K and still good. Just keep them cleaned and adjusted, about every 30K is a good number I think. Good luck.
I just replaced the parking brake shoes and hardware on a 2002 Camry with over 175,000 miles. Of the 4 shoes, only one was worn enough to need replacement. Since they were parking brakes, they don’t wear nearly very fast since they’re not usually stopping a moving vehicle. I noted that there was very little friction material even on the new shoes!
I also had the shoes replaced on a 1999 Ford Windstart at about 140,000 miles. There was still a fair amount of friction material left even then.
So at 52,000 miles, I suspect you have another 100K miles before you have to worry about it. At 5,000 miles a year, that’s another 20 years!
