My 2006 Accord VP ( 4 cyl) is reaching 200k miles, I have no issues , but I wonder when is the best time to replace the water pump?
is the original water pump supposed to pass the 200 k miles?
I’m the first owner and those miles are all highway regular commute. I replace coolant once with original Honda coolant.
I don’t want the pump to fail and cause harm to the engine.
thanks

the best time to replace the water pump is when you would do the timing belt which on that car i normally do that about every 80k miles
May 13, 2013 at 8:29 am #518939thanks, but my car is a 4 cylinder with timing CHAIN !
May 13, 2013 at 8:35 am #518943sorry about that i thought it was a belt
May 14, 2013 at 2:51 am #519207Probably would not hurt to change the water pump.
Get an OE one.May 14, 2013 at 9:16 pm #519381In this case I can’t apply the rule: ” If it’s not broken Don’t fix it”
May 19, 2013 at 11:36 am #520436As an owner of a 2008 CRV and 2007 Accord with the same set up, I’ve wondered the same thing. You could 1, wait until your car overheats from worn down water pump fins, you hear a bearing go, or coolant starts leaking. 2, you could do a standard water pump replacement, new timing chain, and cam shaft seals. with #2 option I am sure you will get many more miles of happiness.
CRV: 104,000 miles; Accord 138,000 miles.
May 19, 2013 at 1:06 pm #520448The water pump only needs to be replaced on chain driven motors if one it’s leaking or two it has seized up other than that don’t fit what’s no broken you cab cause more trouble then your fixing

Now I’ve reached 200k miles, I’ll keep an eye on the temp needle and I’ll pay attention to the fan if it starts to kick in more often, a sign that water is not circulating.
I had a bad experience with my other car (2005 Suzuki Areo SX 2.3 DOHC timing chain), the pump fins went bad but the car never over heated but the fan kept working more often,
I asked the dealer they said summer time and AC!
then the coolant overflow reservoir started to be overfilled and I had to empty it back to the radiator. Again the dealer sold me a new radiator cap! then the head gasket went and you know the rest of the story.

May 20, 2013 at 12:52 am #520623Here’s what the water pump looks like. http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNI-SELECT-PRO-SERIES-PWP9313-Water-Pump-/200925852767?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A2007%7CMake%3AHonda%7CModel%3AAccord&hash=item2ec81d345f&vxp=mtr
This is just an example because I would use Honda parts. The pump is very similar to ones ive seen in belt driven systems.
In my opinion it depends on how much you drive. I drive 25,000-35,000 miles a year and would personally replace the chains, waterpump, etc before 225k. I can’t afford a catastrophic failure or breakdown. How could replacing this be any more complicated than a head gasket, clutch, exhaust valves, or having to replace the engine block because it cracked?
I live in the upper midwest, and I have personally quite a few 2.4 liter motors with 350,000 + miles with great care taken in maintenance. My girlfriend’s friend just fried her 2.4 accord with 99,000 miles because she didnt know she was supposed to change the oil or check it 🙁 🙁
Good luck. I am sure you’ll have good luck with your Accord.

Attachments:May 20, 2013 at 1:04 am #520645I drive 140,000 miles a year !! long story. Already blown engines of three cars in the last six years. It looks Honda is tough and worth keeping.
thanks for the info and the picture too
