Wheel Lock Removal

Hello, my family recently acquired a 2001 Pontiac Montana with all the bells and whistles. When we took it to get it inspected, the mechanic who received the Montana attempted to take the wheels off and discovered that the wheels have wheel locks. He figured this out because he broke the top of one of them and it wasn’t mentioned to us.

No key has been found thus far and we’d rather not pay $200 to $300 to get the locks removed and replaced with regular lug nuts. I am currently enrolled in a vocational school and the instructor, who used to work in a GM dealership, allows students to bring in their vehicles. However not only does the school not have the correct tools, the instructor is uncertain if we can remove the locks with the tools we have.

Making the problem a little bit worse is how the wheel locks on two of the wheels are different from the rest. The RR wheel has the busted lock.

We’ve already obtained new lug nuts and will obtain studs if we have to, but any advice on how to do this while minimizing damage is greatly appreciated.

      Thank you and advance.

It’s a 10 minutes job with the proper tool. shop around for a shop who can remove it for you.

In some case I drill the stud deep enough to get the lock to come as well but that is for tuner nut.

i would just use a mig or stick welder and tack a big hunk of metal or something to it in which i could apply channel locks or vice grips and wrench that mother off.

I had the same problem with a car that i was working on a while back!! U took a 3 inch extention and welded it solid to the lock nut, and used a ratchet, and a breaker bar to pull it off.

It is never a good idea to apply any heat or weld on a wheel/lug when a tire is mounted on it… There is a condition caused Pyrolysis that can kill or injure someone very badly… It is caused by a chemical reaction in the tire, not the air in the tire…

This video documents it very well…. Note the explosion…
