Now that the Subaru is gone I’m thinking of what I’m going to get next. What’s your opinion?

Hi, I am from Germany and really like your channels. I drive a VW Passat 1.9 (BXE) TDI and got a bit frustrated on how complicated and also poorly engineered it is some time. E.g. the fuel time housing broke and blocked the fuel gauge. Pic: http://www.pff.de/porsche/board101-rund-um-porsche-allgemeines/der-zweitwagen/2743781-qualit-t-von-porscheteilen-vs-andere-hersteller/#post153724191. Also it has a lot of plastic parts, it needs some very fancy engine oil and is picky about fuel quality. On the other hand, nothing severe was broken on the last 55.000 mi.
I really like my 1984 Porsche 944, maybe you have a look for this car. It is cheap, has a very interesting drive train, is well engineered and easy to repair. The original repair manuals and spare part catalogs are available online (also in english) and they are free of charge. I also saw your video on your mechanics school. In the lobby was a Porsche engine on display. The 944 has the right bank of this as it’s engine.
November 20, 2013 at 12:13 am #563646
buy some alfa !
there we can repair very long time… π / i just kidding .
and with JTD // JTDm engines is a very good choice !
These engines are really strong, reliable and fuel efficient.
I have 5 cylinder and for a diesel – it has a GREAT sound,
check the link guys.
Hi rushlife! π
Being the owner of a ’02 Punto JTD (it has the 1.9 liter engine, first JTD generation) I cannot but agree with you, the JTDx engines are awesome.
Great MPG (I easily get more than 56MPG) , great torque, great ability to go high on revs, great “tweaking” potential (if you get what I mean π ) , and , in my very humble opinion, great serviceability and reliability.
Even on engines with fixed geometry turbine like mine, the turbo starts pushing at 1500rpms, and keeps on up great to 4500rpms.
In mine, the noise is very much like that of a tractor π , but only outside the car, inside it’s just barely audible.BUT, they are practically impossible to find in the US, and I bet only on Cinquecento’s you can find it.
And only the 1.3 liter multijet, which is too small in my opinion; even with variable geometry turbine, the low end torque just isn’t there.
Where I work we have a 1.3 multijet Panda, which has about the same engine, and it seriously lacks pull at low revs, it seems “empty”! Very very frustrating! :angry:But, to return in topic, if Eric could put his hands on an Alfa Romeo with JTD (JTD, JTDm, or Multijet I / II) engine I think he would be astonished with its economy and driveability :cheer:
My colleague has a Fiat Ulysse , which is about like Eric’s Odyssey, and it has a JTDm engine 2.4 liters and 5 cylinders, like your Alfa Romeo 159, and it just pulls and pulls, the body weight (about 2 tons) is just not too much for that torquy engine! :woohoo:

November 20, 2013 at 1:58 am #563674So what happens if I don’t end up with a TDI or 300D?

π
You’re very funny! :cheer:
But the answer is simple! We learn about something else in your wonderful company! π
Cheers my friend, whatever car you get (and if you need an extra sponsor don’t forget about me π )

November 20, 2013 at 8:23 am #563765You could go with an Isuzu P’UP Turbo Diesel 2.2L, those things are very reliable, and they get around 30-45 mpg on just straight diesel, and they also offered them in 4WD, so you would have a mini pickup with a very efficient diesel engine. I know they are really hard to find though because of their fuel economy.
November 20, 2013 at 10:06 pm #563883A lot of suggestions about diesels. Especially small diesel trucks. Truth is, I haven’t been able to find any. There’s not that many of them and if I DO find a diesel truck it’s made for hauling horse trailers. My point is that yes there are plenty of small pick ups out there but not many that are diesel, and even less that are for sale at this time.
November 21, 2013 at 7:52 am #564090:stick: SO….., I guess you will purchase what is most readily available on the market right now……. Like a mid 2000 Ford Crown Vic police car….. π
November 21, 2013 at 10:59 am #564142Well you definitely cannot go wrong with a Jeep- no matter what year it is!
Eric, I would love to see you get into a pickup truck like you had mentioned. Working on cars is one thing; but then working on a 4×4 truck adds just that much more to it. I would suggest looking for a ZR2 Chevy S10 or GMC Sonoma. Being what I currently own, it’s a decent sized pickup with good hauling capacity. Yet it is not going to park like a bus. Plus having 4-wheel drive is a huge joy to me. It’s amazing what a difference it makes to have all four wheels spinning in low-traction conditions! The ZR2 package also gives you a 2″ factory lift with a wider wheelbase than the stock or 4WD S10s. No it doesn’t have a diesel (which would still be cool). But in my personal opinion these trucks are awesome. Check them out. There are still some out there.
Good luck with your purchase!
November 22, 2013 at 5:53 am #564186The diesel idea is pretty cool, Volvo as well. Im sure whatever you choose will make for some great videos. Selfishly I would suggest a 1st Gen Honda CRV. Both my wife and I drive one (’00 and ’01) so Id be all over them videos. I know some others might be tired of the Hondas but heck… there so freaking popular, so it would be helpful for ALOT of people. Your already very familiar with them Im sure. Lots of modifications you could do.
Your budget would be plenty to find a nice one, might even leave you with some cash for repairs/modifications. I think you’d enjoy one with a 5 speed… like this:

Found this one after the original post. Think its nicer. Could talk him down Im sure, but youd have to make the trip to cbus.
November 22, 2013 at 6:09 am #564189Eric, as your #1 fan, I’d like to help.
Diesels don’t use carburetor, right? I mean, you could always buy an old carburetor and disect it for us, a diesel vehicle, though? Not likely. Maybe searching for a diesel would be the better option.
Also isn’t the routine with German makes as follows: “In order to change windshield wipers, remove engine”? Seems like the tedious process of repairing German vehicles would outweigh the gain, but who knows?
Check out this search I made on AutoTrader
Happy hunting!November 22, 2013 at 6:18 am #5641913,300 vehicles to look at… shouldnt take him too long. haha. I love searching for a new car. π
November 22, 2013 at 6:42 am #564196It looks like I got ahead of myself there! But he can always refine the search to meet his ideals. Of course, I knew that beforehand, as I’m his #.0001 fan!
Perhaps I’ll search specifically for Hondas.November 22, 2013 at 4:16 pm #564253The search is over!

AWESOME! :woohoo:
Really looking forward to 2014 and Oliver’s (did I get the name right? π ) “invisible” transformation!
Thanks for sharing the drivearound and the details of her, she looks sounds and feels great!
