My wife drives a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT with a manual transmission. Her transmission is making all sorts of wonderful grinding sounds and has metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug. It’s time for a new transmission.

I’ve arranged to pick up a used transmission from a local used parts yard. I wanted to know if there is anything I should inspect or watch out for on the transmission before I install it in her car. I changed her clutch a year and a half ago, so I’m familiar with what I’m going to need to do with the transmission swap. I just want to make sure that I can spot any problems with this transmission if there are any, before I take the time to put it in the car.

I will probably look the case over to make sure there isn’t any visual damage. Besides that, I’ll probably pull the drain plug to see if there are any metal shavings. I’ll probably

As posted above, it sounds like you know what to look for. I would also see if you can manually shift through the gears as well as rotating the input shaft by hand.

I might add to check for obvious play in the input shaft, but other than that, you and the gang here have it pretty covered.

A warranty is your best friend here, you can do a good visual on it as recommended as well. Something I think is worth mentioning is that if you did a clutch only a year ago and replaced the fluid make sure you use the correct fluid and fill it according to the service procedure so check the service manual and make sure you’re putting the right stuff in at the right level as you don’t want the same thing to happen to your new transmission.
