      Hi all!

Recently, I replaced the manual transmission in my wife’s 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT. The car had about 150k on it, and the transmission was making wonderful grinding noises in every gear, as well as neutral. I suspect maybe the input bearing went bad because the grinding would happen when I released the clutch, even in neutral. When I would push the clutch in, the grinding would stop. I think that the bearing went on it first, and then I’m assuming the metal chips inside the transmissions just did damage throughout. That’s just my speculation though, I haven’t actually opened up the trannie to see what happened.

I just bought a used transmission from a salvage yard to install as the cheapest option to get the car going again. The used trans had 67K miles on it. I installed it over a weekend with some help from a friend and the car drives good as new now.

The salvage yard that I bought the transmission from said they did not need my old transmission for a core charge. So right now, I’ve got it tucked away in the corner of my garage. I’m not sure what I want to do with it. Would it be worth anything to rebuild? I don’t even know if there are transmission rebuild kits available for this transmission. I’ve thought about just scrapping it and seeing what I can get, but I’m sure it won’t be much. I’ve even though about opening it up just to see what actually went wrong in there.

My other thought is does the transmission have any value “as-is” to a transmission shop or someone else looking to do a rebuild of their own. I would happily sell it to someone that would use it over just scrapping it.

To get back on topic, would it be worth the investment to rebuild it? I have the capability to rebuild it myself if I choose to do that. I know it will take a good chunk of my time though, and right now, my time is pretty valuable (Just had a baby about a month ago and I don’t have much free time to spare at home). If I choose to rebuild it, what would I expect to be able to sell it for, and is there really a market for rebuilt Hyundai Elantra manual transmissions? It would be a financial investment to rebuild it, and it might be hard to sell.

I’m thinking my best bet would be to either scrap it or try to find a buyer that would want to buy it and rebuild it themselves. Maybe a transmission shop would be interested in buying it, but that might be a hard sell. The idea of rebuilding it myself sounds like it could be a fun little weekend project, but I don’t know how realistic it would actually be. I would hate to fork over $500 for rebuild parts, and then have not be able to sell the transmission.

I’m looking for some advice on what to do with it. I want to get it out of my garage so I can regain some floor space. Thanks for the help.

I would just send it to a junk yard or try selling it as damaged.

The idea of rebuilding a trans if fun but the novelty soon wears off when you have to buy the tools and so forth.

It not likely you will benefit from rebuilding a manual transmission. I have done a few and if you have to replace a gear, get ready for the screaming since they won’t match exactly. As mentioned before just sell it on Craigslist, give it away on freecycle or take it a recycle center or junk yard. Each has its on merits and problems.

Could always donate it to a technical or high school or something like that.

            Or…

That is awesome. Sadly, a FWD transaxle wouldn’t make a sink as awesome as that.

Do you think there is a market for used/damaged transmissions? I would imagine there would be, but I don’t know. Do transmission shops buy used transmissions to rebuild and sell to customers?

I hadn’t thought of the school idea. I live near a technical school that does automotive repair as well as a local community college. That’s not even counting the local schools around here. I may consider it.

Does anyone have a guess about how much I woulds get if I just scrapped it?

You would get roughly $0.05-$0.10/lb. if you scrapped it.Gas money.

I would donate it to a school and let them gain the experience of putting it back together.
