Today I decided to test my o2 sensors on my 1996 chevy k1500 to my knowledge the o2 sensors have never been replaced. I used my Haynes manual to test one of the sensors. It was supposed to have between .1 and .9 volts however I could only get .01-.06 I had my volt meter set to 20 and I also tried the mili volts and came out with the same numbers. I then tried unplugging the sensor and testing off the prongs that matched the two wires and came with the same numbers.

Also, I have a scan guage two that can tell me what the o2 sensors are reading and all the sensors seem to me all over the place. I do know that my bank1 cat is coming apart.

The truck seems to run pretty good for the most part there does seem to be a slight struggle going from say 55 to 65mph or on a hill it kills my mileage down to about 8 mpg but its a hill but on the low end it seems fine and has tons of power and regular driving I can get 16-19 mpg.

      What are your thoughts?

I know my column shifter cable is loose it always has been. And today I unbolted the muffler and looked at the cat that was closest and it looks really clean even brand new but if I bang on it it still sounds like there is just a few pebbles or something in it I’m not sure. I think I’ll look into the shifter cable though because that has bugged me for the last 3 years lol

id remove the cat assuming its not rusted on there and shine a flashlight through it see if its stopped up generally a clogged cat will make the car hard to start from all the exhaust build up

Depending on how you checked this O2 sensor if it was done correctly you seem to have a bad sensor as your readings do not come close to what they should be
.1-.9V and .01-.06V is the same thing the 0 behind means nothing your O2 sensor appears to be normal and operating properly O2 sensors have 4 wires 2 for the heater in the sensor and 2 for the sensor itself. This could mean that the sensors getting the voltage but the heater side dont work which is the most common issue try replacing the sensor(s) that do not get a consistant reading. numbers all over the place generally means the its a bad sensor or a wiring problem check the sensor(s) in ohms not volts
Voltage readings constantly fluctuating between 0.1 and 0.9 Volts mean the sensor is working. 0.01 – 0.06 Volts is NOT the same as 0.1 – 0.9 Volts. These sensors DO NOT get voltage they produce or make the voltage
possibly im acustomed to dealing with whole voltages. when you want to test sensors you want to test it in ohms and then check the resistance its easier that way
You don’t check these by measuring ohms you check by measuring voltage fluctuation.
Well and the other thing is I can beat on that catalytic converter and it rattles but I don’t have a chek engine light.
Your catalytic converter needs to be replaced if it is rattling inside and this could be why the O2 may not be operating properly.

or just rip the cats out… they rob HP and MPGs anyways

thank you for correcting me. I dont know anything about car sensors and i was going based on household electronics.

Like i stated below i am used to dealing with ohms or whole vlotages. Thanks for clairifying.
