I wanted to check the AC to make sure it was topped off in my 02 Ford explorer and i bought a can of the AC recharge, I added a little to it. When i took off the connecter for the low side, the valve started leaking and i couldn’t stop it, so all the gas came out, now i have no ac… 🙁 .

Does the AC have to be vacumed out now? Should I get a valve for ~$15 and the tool for ~$55 or would it be better to just take it some place and have them fix it? and what would i need done?

I’m wondering how much something like this would cost.

Since the system should be evacuated anyway I would have a technician repair it, evacuate, add some oil and recharge it.

As far as cost…better get on the phone.

I would have it professionally fixed unless you have the means to evacuate and have the system placed under a vacuum making sure that shrader valve leak is fixed.

The system does need to be vacuumed. As suggested
call some shops and price it out. For you to buy the
tool for one time use is not cost effective. Then theres
            the vacuum pump.

thanks guys i took your advice, $164 for repair, evac, and recharge…$8 for the valve at the dealership picking it up tomorrow morning, I finally found a good shop, Rayco in Eatontown, NJ. I went to Pepboys 2 days ago for a front suspension check and they told me everything was fine, but i heard a bang on the driver’s side front wheel and today after taking it off the lift and driving it 20 feet the ball joint went, and the tire was hanging off. thank goodness it happened at the shop and not on the road, we could’ve killed someone. Pepboys offered me a $20.00 store credit, the cost of the check, gee thanks….

If that happened in the shop where I work someone would be out the door immediately!
