IMO, what makes a good technician is the ability to logically and accurately diagnose problems and preform the necessary repairs in a professional manner.
There is a big difference between a technician and a parts changer.

I agree with Xyius, dedication and attention to detail will separate the technicians from John Doe, the guy who tosses parts at a car until either it is fixed or the owner runs out of cash.
🙂 A great technician is a combination of many things that make up their personality. He or she will be a able to communicate and listen carefully to others technicians and customers. They will have good work habits of being able to work efficiently and safely. The tools of a great technician will be clean and working correctly. He or she will work in a clean environment and have clean work habits and will return repaired vehicles unsoiled by their work. He will care for a customer’s car as if it is his own. He will take the time to make sure the repair is correct and will inform the customer of his work, either by written notes or personal contact. A great technician will not make personal judgments about other technicians or their repairs, and will try to help or teach others to make a repair correctly. The goal of all technicians should be to strive to be the best at what they do. No one is perfect, but if a person strives to be the best, they will succeed.
